Using my Nikon D5100 as a webcam with Mac

Hello, 

 

For days now I have been searching how to use my Nikon D5100 as a webcam since I want to start giving online courses. I could use my computers webcam, but it seems such a waste not to go for a much higher quality and use my DSLR.

I have bought a HDMI cable to connect the camera to the Mac, and have installed Screenflow as the video tool. However, the Mac does not seem to find or recognize the signal from my camera. I am now at a loss ... Do I need another device between the camera and the Mac, or another video tool, or something else ...?

You need a video capture card, and right now, with the current situation, video capture cards are difficult to find at a reasonable price.

To use the HDMI output from the camera you will need a capture card as well.

 

With some cameras you can used software plus USB tethering to control the camera and record video over USB.

there is a super cheap capture card out now but no one knows how long it will last
