Should I install Windows or Linux??

I am building my first gaming pc and I've seen a lot of things about Linux being better. What do you prefer? Linux or Windows 10?1

I personally use Linux for most things, with the exception of gaming. For gaming you'll have a better time with Windows. You can certainly game on Linux (I do that too, for games that do run). But most games are exclusively tested and developed on Windows, so you'll have less trouble there, especially if you have no prior experience with Linux.

 

~edit: I have both Windows and Linux on my machine (dual boot), so it's not like that has to be an exclusive decision.

Some might call me old fashioned, but i like windows 7.  Still relevant, but so much lighter than 10.  As long as you don't have only USB 3 ports on your mobo, you will be able to install it just fine and I have only found one piece of hardware that doesn't function under windows 7 (a track pad on a laptop).

I would only recommend Linux if you really have the time and patience to get it working exactly the way you want it. It's capable, but definitely not as user friendly and accessible like macOS and Windows. I'm in Computing Science and I still avoid using Linux for daily tasks. It's not an operating system I would consider as a daily driver for the average joe.

Well none of the platforms you can buy today from Intel or AMD can't run Windows 7, so there's that problem. Windows Vista was great.

I might do the dual boot option. Is there a specific level of specs preferred or it doesn't matter?

just to be clear, the z490 chipset works with windows 7x64 SP1 and it was released only months ago.

What would you be doing with linux that you cant with windows? for a "first" gaming PC windows will be a much better experience for support and ability to game

I am an avid coder and I heard that there is more freedom with coding on Linux. I'll use Linux when I want to code and Windows for when I want to game.

Dual booting needs additional hard drive space, since you're installing two OSs, but that's about it. Linux itself doesn't require much space, but if you want to try and game on it, games will of course require additional space. However, hardware support on Linux can be a spotty, especially with newer GPUs, so it might take some time until you have stable drivers.

 

I do use Linux as my daily driver and I use it to game whenever possible (mostly through Steam). With that being said, Windows is less of a hassle, especially for newer games. My advice would be to try it and see how you like it but do be prepared from some occasional issues. For a less invasive installation you can always use a live CD or a virtual machine.

That is true, during my degree I've used a linux vm for most coding projects besides simple python

FYI, this works fairly well if you just need a terminal coding experience, you can access all the files through the normal windows explorer

Depends on the games you play mostly, wanna struggle trough Blizzards and Ubisofts hatred of emulation? If not then Windows 10.

Is there an unofficial patch to make it work? Could've sworn Intel dropped support for Windows 7 with 8th gen.
