I'm using a 2.1 cheapo speakers that cost $16-$17, plugged as sub+center. The sub lack of 'dooommmm', though, but it's enough for my office. For front speaker, I use small harman/kardon satellites that cost $9 (the one that originally came with HP laptops). Total cost me below $30, and the sound is nice enough for my personal use.

Edit: I forgot that my sub was later 'modded' a little. I stuffed some pillow-fill into it, and it sound a little deeper.

x-240's are what I have and they're always on sale 'used' http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-X-240-2-1-Speakers-Black/dp/B000MDZWUS/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1393192794&sr=1-1&keywords=x240+logitech

I've never had any trouble with any of them despite being 'used'.

They have a decent amount of bass too.
