X79 Compatibility with newer GPU's

Hi,

 

I'm currently running an i7 3970x which is completely fine in terms of performance, i'm rarely seeing over 40% CPU load so I don't think it's necessary to upgrade based on performance. However I'm considering buying an RTX 2070 Super, which is where the problems start.

 

i7 3970x - Intel Ark

 

The 3970x only supports PCIe 2.0, but has 40 PCIe lanes and can transfer at 8GT/s. I doubt I'll run into a bottleneck, but I'd rather get some opinions before I drop cash on the card.

I see no problem 

It should work just at  lower lanes which even till this day is not saturated by most high end gpus
