A noob needs to know if it is time to upgrade

Budget (including currency): 1500-2000

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Photo/video editing, content creation 

I currently have a Lenovo Y50-70 gaming laptop. 15.6 inch 4K/UHD display. 8 gigs of Ram, 1TB HDD, and 8 GB SSD. 4th gen quad core intel i7. 

My question....to do photo, video editing and content creation do I need to upgrade now or can it wait?

the ssd sounds week but it depands if u want to go desktop or stay laptop

Do you feel like the laptop is holding you back with the work that you are doing? If yes, then consider upgrading. We don't know if you "need to" upgrade.

@Bdevilfan32 A quad core intel i7 can hold for video editing, but what is you GPU?

Also that SSD and 8 gig of RAM is pretty low if you ask me.

If you can, I'd suggest you to wait for the new release of AMD CPUs and Nvidia GPUs for now tho :D

Just want to emphasize this point: you need to upgrade when your system cannot do the things you want it to do.  So try doing the things you want to do, and if it can't do it or is intolerably slow, then it is time to upgrade.

That's not an SSD, he has th WD Black SSHD that comes in the Y50. It's also a 960M or 860M. Both are the exact same GPU though. A rebranded 750 Ti. As for the CPU, boost is disabled in multicore so that i7 is slower than a modern day Athlon in most cases.

Consider waiting a bit more for Ryzen 4000 in September if you want a desktop or get an Asus Zephyrus G15 with Ryzen 4000 for laptops

honestly, if you dont know that you have to upgrade, you shouldnt. its that easy.

You probably should wait for new cpus. if you cant this motherboard will support the next cpus with bios update:

Motherboard tier list. Tier A for overclocking 5950x. Tier B for overclocking 5900x, Tier C for overclocking 5800X. Tier D for overclocking 5600X. Tier F for 4/6 core Cpus at stock. Tier E avoid.

(Also case airflow matter or if you are using Downcraft air cooler)

Bear in mind that if you're going to wait for new CPUs, I'd wait for the new "economy line" of motherboards to come out as well.  I believe they're going to be B550's?
