Best Shutdown Time?

Pikadex

Hello, new member here, and also a first time PC owner as well!

As expected, there’s a lot of stuff I dont know yet, and I have too many questions regarding what is best for my computer.

Anyways, so what I wanted to ask was, what is the best time to shutdown the computer, and when it isn’t completely off, how long should it run, and how? I wanted to know if leaving it on all day (i use it most of the day) is a good idea, and shutting it down overnight.

In case it is necessary, my specs are a Ryzen 7 3700X, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super, and I have 16GB RAM. The computer is brand new, just set up last night.

Thanks!

Thanks

I never shut my system down, unless there is a storm coming, or I"m going away for several days.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Sleep mode is preferable to full shutdown, since it's just a lot faster to get back into the OS. I only shut down my PC when I won't be using it for a week or more.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

It's all up to you, it has no effect on longevity or performance as to when and how long you shut down. As for me, I have an SSD so I shut my PC down every night when I'm done for the day, it helps me feel organised. Some prefer to leave it running, some use sleep mode. In the end, just find what works best for you.

Shut it down if you have a problem. Hibernate if you have an SSD. Almost as fast to start up as sleep but uses the same amount of power as full shut down instead of sleep's slight, but still present, power draw.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Oh boo hoo. Yes it writes some data, but you'd need to hibernate 20 times a day to approach the write endurance of a modern SSD in the upgrade cycle of an average user.

I just shut down when I'm done for the day, no point leaving it running.

This.

There's litlle point keeping a PC turned on for the sake of it if it's not doing anything.

and we will live such tragedy in perpetuity.

And your average user doesn't know this, and will happily hibernate 20 times a day if all they do is use Farcebook every now and then.

You're right, but why shut down over sleep?

Unless I am folding it gets shut down Sunday night and booted Friday evening and anytime in between I am not using it.

I only seem to game about 10 hours a week on it at most these days. I don’t seem to have a moments free time apart from breaks to browse the forum...

Well start up for me doesn't take long at all, and sleep still consumes power doesn't it?

Thank you everyone!

I just have one concern though, when in sleep mode overnight, the computer and monitors randomly came on a couple of times during the night, which interrupts me greatly. Is there any way to prevent this?

Turn the monitors off?
