Soo I'm thinking of building a NAS out of my old PC. It's a MSI B85M-G43 with a Intel Pentium G-3258, and 8GB of Ram will it work well enough for transferring files for video editing? and second question anyone have any suggestions of extra hardware I need in order to build this rig for raid 5? Suggestions would be appreciated.

This will be more than just fine for transfering files.

You don't need any additional hardware really. Just a few drives, which have to be securely mounted within a chassis, as they will be running 24/7.

For RAID 5 you will of course need at least 3 drives, but I don't necessarily recommend a RAID 5 anyway. Either a RAID 1 or one of FreeNAS' ZFS filesystems will do just fine, if not better.

And a SSD or not for running it off of?

If you're running something like FreeNAS or uNRAID it used a thumbdrive for the OS. You can use a SSD as a cache drive though

A thumb drive to boot off of? or run off of? FreeNAS ZFS is likely gonna be what I want to install. You can probably tell that I'm 100% beginner on doing this. Does FreeNAS ZFS run off of a os or not? or is that just my main computer? Because I'm dual booting Windows/Linux on my main desktop and also working on getting mac os running on KVM on linux. Soo will a small ssd like a kingston 120GB work ok to boot off of and what would you suggest for a ssd size for the cache? I do also have a 1tb sshd kicking around if it would work for that.
