From a price to performance standpoint that Gskill kit is the best $/GB 3600Mhz CL16 kit available.

X470 is going to 'better' than B450. MSI 'Max' motherboards support 3rd gen Ryzen out of the box. And yes it is a good motherboard. The other good alternative is:

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/jcYQzy/msi-b450-tomahawk-max-atx-am4-motherboard-b450-tomahawk-max

Other than PCIe 4.0 NVME drives, no nothing supports it yet.

wait a min, does that mean that NOT ALL x470 motherboards support Ryzen 3rd gen?

I was looking at ASUS Prime X470-pro since the black and white matches the case more. Should I be checking somewhere if it supports Ryzen 3rd gen first?

If it is the same amount of RAM total 16GB as the Team T-Force Delta RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) which costs 6 dollars more, how does it give you better price to performance (it does not because the G Skill RAM that the OP has included in his build list costs $85.99 while the Team T-Force Delta RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) costs $79.99; price per GB for the G Skill RAM is $5.374375 while the price per GB for the T-Force Delta RGB is $4.999375)?

And, you can overclock the RAM speed on the Team T-Force Delta RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) higher than the stock 3000 megahertz.

Hey thanks all for your input!

I knew I can count on this forum 👍

Here is my updated list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Bz7hx6

I basically changed the motherboard to a X470 and added a HDD.

I got a compatibility warning, saying that I might need to update the BIOS for the motherboard so that it is compatible with Ryzen 3rd Gen.

I have no idea how to do that, but I am sure I can do some googling for instructions.

My main concern is that I will need a older CPU (which I do not have any) in order to update the BIOS.

Is that going to be an issue, or will new orders usually come with the latest BIOS already?

B450 and X470 motherboards launched with 2nd gen Ryzen so some may require a bios update. The MSI 'Max' series has the latest bios for 3rd gen Ryzen out of the box. Some B450/X470 boards will was 'supports 3rd gen Ryzen' others, if old stock, may not and would require an update that may require the use of a 2nd gen cpu in order to boot the system into bios, update it, and remove the CPU to use the R5 3600.

Lol you left out "the best $/GB 3600Mhz CL16 kit available." I didn't say best $/GB 16GB kit.

For $6 more to get 3600Mhz CL16 memory is a no brainer. It is highly unlikely that a cheap 3000MHz kit will OC to 3600Mhz, kits rated at 3600Mhz can't even reach that speed half the time. With Ryzen anything past 2666MHz is considered memory overclocking so mileage may vary. My 32GB 3200Mhz Corsair kit was able to go to 3466Mhz (with manual DRAM voltage adjustment and tightening up RAM timings) but no further. I have seen many people post on here that they cannot get their kit to run at the rated speeds.

You likely wouldn't be able to tell the difference from an overclocked Team T-Force Delta RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) and the G Skill RAM in the OP's original PCPartsPicker list and you get RGB support on the Team T-Force Delta RGB Ram. Ryzen 2nd gen does not benefit as much from super fast RAM nearly as much as the 1st gen Ryzen chips, and overclocked Team T-Force Delta RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) should be sufficient for speed.

Unfortunately, more than likely you will not get the latest BIOS from a new order since the motherboards are often there in warehouses for some time before the latest BIOS was created by the manufacturer. It could be an issue if you don't have an older CPU to update the BIOS and you get a BIOS version that does not support the Ryzen 5 3600X.

No necessarily true, again mileage can vary, but 3rd gen Ryzen loves fast dual channel memory, and here for the price it makes most sense.

Okay, this is a good point, although if you don't need to have RGB support, I would go with the G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) F4-3600C19D-16GVRB instead of the G.Skill RipJaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) F4-3600C16D-16GVKC.

Costs $74.99 instead of the $ 84.99 cost of the G.Skill RipJaws V Series F4-3600C16D-16GVKC bringing the cost per GB down to be $ 4.686875.

@Colby_Junior; I would recommend buying a 2 pack of Deepcool RF 140 fans instead of buying two separate units of Phanteks 140 fans, you are paying $ 33.96 for the Phanteks 140 fans instead of the $ 31.99 for the Deepcool RF 140 fans which come with RGB lighting that you can always disable if you would like.

Again not recommended that is CL19 memory, it will not perform the same at all, OP is better off with a 3200Mhz CL16 than the kit linked.

CL = CAS latency, in short refers to the speed at which the memory reads cached info, so the lower the number the better.

wait a min, does that mean that NOT ALL x470 motherboards support Ryzen 3rd gen?

I was looking at ASUS Prime X470-pro since the black and white matches the case more. Should I be checking somewhere if it supports Ryzen 3rd gen first?

Most will need a bios update though some will support it out of the box

Good suggestion on the fan, thanks!
