What is a swap partition?

I'm installing freenas on an old pc and it asked me if I wanted to install a 16gb swap partition on boot devices. What is it and should I do it? The system has a core2 q8200, 4gb ram, and 2 1 terabyte hard drives (using one of them as the boot drive because it was what I had laying around)
