Seriously giants like Facebook and Google are spending so much on so many unproven or just flat out not that valuable companies they might eventually cause another dot.com bubble fiasco. Seriously it's a fucking text messenger, how is it worth even 1 billion let alone 16? Is not like Facebook it's hurting for a large user base.

So what exactly is Whatsapp? Seems i'm a bit late on the uptake.

(I think it's a pic or msg or pic/msg chat thing) but fb has it's own chat? i dont see why..

Basically, free texting over Wifi (initially). You use the contact's phone number, but it's done through Wifi, bypassing the carrier.

It's handy to avoid international texting issues. BBM, Google Hangouts and iMessage are equivalent features, but not all of them are cross-platform like WhatsApp.
