1440p 144hz target for 2000-ish

Hey all,

Just wondering if this build is stupid for my target of 144hz/1440p gaming with every title totally maxed out graphically.

I haven’t built in a while, and I want this build to be future proof and be able to handle the target for future titles into the next gen of consoles and whatnot. It seems like overkill compared to a lot of the builds going for the same target that I see on here, but again I want to be future proof to some extent.

Thanks a lot for looking And any suggestions would be welcome!

You'll want to pick a different motherboard.  The cheaper MSI X570 motherboards can't quite handle a 3900x/3950x powerwise.  They were the subject of the recent Hardware Unboxed/Toms "Just Buy It!" Hardware scrape.

I suggest the Gigabyte Aorus Elite Wifi or the Asrock X570 Steel Legend Wifi.  Others will no doubt recommend the Asus X570 TUF Wifi but I'm not a fan of it's realtek NIC.

Yeah looks like a good build but I would:

1. Go for an air cooler

2. Get a smaller SSD and big HDD instead of big, expensive SSD

That seems pretty decent.

However idd go for air cooling (Noctuaaaaa) cheaper, same perf, sometimes more silent and will hold up much longer.

BOSS but brown: https://noctua.at/de/products/cpu-cooler-retail/nh-u12a, Black and fat (check case compatibility) https://noctua.at/de/products/cpu-cooler-retail/nh-d15-chromax-black
Take cheaper but 3600Mhz RAM. Will get you a bit more out of your 3900x (more than 3600Mhz wont help much). I know those corsair sticks are sexy but good old trident z will do the job cheaper.

Mobo: EDIT: I am silly I read that it was the B450 EDIT

This is the best B450 board and it can do the 3900x (no OCing). If OP doesn't need the extra features of x570 there is nothing wrong with a B450 board.

If you want to get every little bit out of the 3900x and possible future even stronger CPUs idd recommend a x570 MOBO.

yes this MOBO is trash. Get a Gigabyte!

SSD: Samsung is good but expensive. I run a silicon power A80 and the Samsung 970. Perf is nearly identical and the A80 cheaper. Well but I somehow trust the Samsung more. So thats up to you

PSU: Cheaper and better ones available. However I also run crosair PSUs. I trust them and the warranty is pretty decent

MSI's B450 motherboards are alright.  MSI x570 motherboards are mostly trash and the specific board OP chose is known to have it's VRMs overheat with a 3900x installed.

Both the Asrock x570 Steel Legend wifi and Gigabyte x570 Aorus Elite wifi are both better values than the Asus x570 TUF.  Asus TUF uses realtek nic when everyone else is using Intel NIC.  Asus is famous for reserving features for the ROG line that everyone else includes standard on their boards.

I dont think thats the best value. Buildzoid hated the VRM on it if I remember correctly...

Your changes:

RAM: yes!

Storage: yes, idd go with A80, is this one also physon based?

GPU/CPU: OP only gaming? Then yes. If he is doing anything else or streams: Keep the super and the 3900x

You really won't notice much of any improvement with a 3900X compared to a 3700X just in gaming, so if that's all you're planning on doing then you can save some money with that.

MSI's entry to mid level X570 boards should be avoided, chose a less expensive but still very good SSD, and also a slightly better PSU.

The Aorus Elite has had major BIOS fuck-ups. I'd personally avoid it. The Asus board really has the most functional and stable BIOS from the entry-level X570 ones. VRMs are also capable of handling an overclocked 3900X so I'd say it's perfectly good for a 3700X

Asus has had plenty of BIOS fuck-ups as well.  As it stands the TUF is a budget board trying to masquerade as a midrange board.  Any B450/X570 motherboard *should* handle a 3950X and the fact that some MSI boards don't is a major red flag.

Yes 3700x will be fine on the TUF. But why buy such a cut down board if you can get something better for the same price?

ASUS makes you pay for the brand bro (no hate, writing this on a x570 STRIX E)

No idea how new it is, but it is good enough for a gaming pc. You get a 5 year warranty on it. The Silicon A80 is listed at $129.99 so $10 more.

Ill stick with my recommendation of the elite, but steel legend is also an option.

I'd say Steel Legend or Pro4 if he wants to save a buck are good options too. ASRock has been solid with AM4

yeha but it will still stress the CPU. And IF op does get into the whole streaming and video stuff it wont hurt to have multitasking power. But sure gaming only (and occasional streaming): 3700x and 2800ti
