Is an 850w psu overkill for my system?

I currently have a 550w psu but need a higher wattage psu because I ordered a 2080 super.

You don't need more wattage, you don't need another PSU in the 1st place.

nvidia recommends at least 650w for 2080 super but only the 850w g3 is available on amazon from evga, not sure if I have to upgrade or will I be good with 550w.

Now if you really want to upgrade : Corsair RMx 650W or Phanteks AMP 650W are very good (better than G3).

Well, rn theres the Revolution D.F. 650w thats in stock. Better than both of the ones you named at a similiar price. But to expand your answer & give an actual reason why the G3 sucks. The OCP (Over-Current Protection) is set too high & triggers when its out of spec (too late)

You will be fine you current psu, no need to worry.
