rynez vs intel

i have a gtx 980ti and was wonder what a good cpu for it would be i have a choice of either a ryzen 1400 or i7 2600k

Honestly they probably are quite similar but I would go Ryzen all the way. If you get a decent B450 motherboard you can easily upgrade the CPU to the latest on the AM4 platform, or next gen when it launches, plus it uses DDR4 RAM which is now the standard.

first gen Ryzen is more comparable to 4th gen Intel, so it certainly beats second gen. DDR4 3000 or 3200 is real cheap as well.

i might not be able to find a good mobo for this cpu but the i7 2600k has a nice mobo?

You are probably more likely to find a good used AM4 motherboard than something good for LGA1155.

Quick question, are you buying these component to finish a build, or to upgrade a build?  

 

If you're upgrading, and your current system is essentially running okay, then I'd say just save up until you can go Ryzen.  If you're completing a build, then go for the Intel, it fits the budget your working with and the CPU will do a good job for you.  You won't have as nice of an upgrade path as you would on Ryzen, but hey, who knows what you'll even want with your next upgrade or build.

It's comparable clock for clock. The 4790k still beat first gen Ryzen stuff if they were both overclocked.

 

That being said, I'd also recommend Ryzen, as it gives you an easy upgrade path. A 2600k gives you nowhere to go.

Why a Ryzen 1400 or a 2600k?

A Ryzen 1600AF is $85. A regular 1600 can be found used for $65-70. 

 

Honestly as far as I can tell a Ryzen 1600 gives you 2 cores more for a tad more $. It's really worth finding that extra couple of bucks if you can. 

 

Unless someone is literally gifting you a Ryzen 1400 or 2600k I see no reason to buy them at their outrageously high used prices.

Well my budget is $460 Aus and I bought a gtx 980ti for $220 so I have 220 to get everything else and Ruben are hard to come across on the Australian market

Cool.  Then just get whatever fits your budget.  Problem solved IMO.
