As some of your may know, I bought my previous PC from my local PC pre-built, though I built a little bit.   Anyways, I asked for a refund due to the fact I'm moving to a whole new place and the computer keeps having problems and repairs cost hundreds of dollars.  Anyways, I'm not the richest person around and I have to work for money as others do.  I took the computer in because the power supply I thought was faulty, I heard a buzzing noise from it and it had a burning smell coming from it.  The system has warranty on it.  Anyways, I get a call back after 2 WEEKS!  and they say it was because I had an out of date driver... I had installed all the latest drivers before hand :/  I told them that and they didn't listen.  Then I told them what about the power supply, They said it was FINE.  Then they said I'll need to pay over $100 because they installed a new driver... then after some negotiating it came down to $80...

They wont give me a refund and I feel they are lying to me.  It took 2 weeks for them to install a driver?!?!!?  I'm really getting my money drained by these guys and I need help on what I should do.  I paid a total of $2,500 for an unbalanced system and a WARRANTY that wont let me get a refund or they wont even buy it back for less!  I need help.  Thanks in advance, I had feeling this might be against COC, so I had a look and didn't see anything about asking things like this, so please tell me if it is against COC.  Thanks guys!

I had the choice of them, but I like to pay with cash because I hate debt.

ohhhhhhhhh you done goofed, this is why you do large payments with credit or debit at the least.

idk how it works with NZ but there might be a public consumer government program that might be able to mediate or intervene.

If you had done it with a credit or VISA card you could have just filed a chargeback claiming a faulty product and refused return and told them to keep it.

Its almost like they chose parts specially so it would fail.  Its not just a coincidence i've had 2 power supplies fail in 2 months and I've had memory and hard drive issues constantly.  Because that shouldn't happen unless I'm the most unlucky guy in the world.

Shouldn't the warranty be covering the services you're getting done? The fact that you've gone and paid for the services is an issue. I would have immediately spoken to a manager, owner, etc.

debit card gives you no debt. And same with credit card if you pay it in full the month after (plus you get scam protection and smexy miles or cashback!)

Computer repairs, just like car repairs are all basically scams. They will claim other stuff is wrong, and they will make you pay extreme costs for labor. Linus is right when he says the profit is not in retailers, but rather repair shops. My car dealer charges around $160 an hour for repairs, so it's not surprising you had to pay $80 for half an hour of driver installation. That's why with cars and computers, you got to do it yourself! Parts cost a lot less than labor most of the time.

True, plus most goods prices are inflated to counter the cash back and bonus programs given by credit card companies, so really you're losing out by not using them.

One of my friends orders his farms feed on a credit card. So $150,000/month. He has maaaaaad air miles!

Computer shops are there for people that can't. Same with automotive repair shops. If you factor in the tools, years of training, etc there's a very good reason why the costs are high. It's not really a scam at all.

I do agree that things like oil changes, headlights, etc should be learned at the very least when owning a car. With computers it's so simple that really everything should be learned. It's basically electronic Ikea furniture.

No, if it carries the Visa (I know of Visa specifically) or Mastercard logo even a debit card is eligible to be treated as credit to perform a chargeback.

It might be harder and there are less legally binding rules to the issuer of the debit card, but it does exist and can be done.

I tried to ask my landlord to use my credit card for my rent but he wouldn't agree. It sucks because it's a monthly sum that's a third of my salary and it would give me so much more miles. BTW your friend's $150,000 a month farm feed story is awesome. He better have done his research right to get the absolute best credit cards to get the most miles and or cashback.

Not sure about chargebacks, but when some piece of crap stole my debit card and charged $500 of purchases on it, I was thankfully able to get it all back thanks to some free insurance or whatever from visa or my bank. I would have never gotten the money back if it was cash.

I know it sounds stupid, but threaten to call the better business bureau. Usually they'll bend over backwards if they think you're going to do it. Also, if they still don't budge, you can actually call the BBB and then they will usually handle it by negotiating with the business and should give you back the money or something.

Yep, VISA is pretty nice about things.

There should be a 120 day window to chargeback, even on a debit.

If they're a small business they might not even care about the BBB, honestly they're shit useless but I guess might as well try.

I don't think it would apply. When going through the till you select debit, and it goes through the bank.

Might be different where you live. I have a Visa debit card, I can use it at (most) online places. That's the only advantage. The rest is directly through the bank. If I were to call Visa, they'd have no idea.

Didn't you say you paid for a warranty? You should find out exactly what it is, what it does and does not cover.

Go to the site I linked you to, and read through it. You might have a decent case.

Yeah, it's a little tricky to accept rent and such on a credit card. Most landlords prefer post dated cheques.

Oh, he did. He hasn't gotten to use it much since he's usually working and has 3 kids now haha. "Please man, just pass them my way."
