Why is my CPU using so much voltage!!!???

This. I run 4.5ghz at 1.25v, you just didn't get a good chip.

All CPUs are not the same as Mixzzz said, you lost in silicon lottery, there isn't much you can do at all. Unless magicaly you can return it and get another.

My 4770k uses about 1.2v @ stock according to HWMonitor. :(

as a side question, if you do lose the lottery could you return the cpu and just buy a new one? are there restrictions on that?

I have my i7 4770k clocked at 4Ghz using 1.280V, I can;t overclock it anymore bc it always crashes!! WHY!  My motherored (MSI Z87-G41) wont let me go over 1.300V. ANY IDEAS?? PLEASE HELP!

Mine too :D

I didn't change anything in the BIOS, but I wanted to overclock, so I changed a few settings before posting this. Right now the voltage is at 1.15v and the core ratio at 40. It boots and idles at 35-40C. I haven't tested anything yet, but I'll keep going up slowly. People say Prime95 is bad for Haswell, and I want to ask what stress testing software you use so I can see if it's stable at anything above 4ghz :D

Unfortunately you just got a chip that doesn't overclock very well and, you can't exchange it for that type reason.

I had to update my MSI bios to enable higher voltages via the drop down list of extra voltage selections.

+0.2, +0.4, +0.6

Updated, now can go up to +1.4

Maybe an update to your motherboard is in order.

I use intel burn test for testing my cpu stability.   :)

I was thinking of that :D

One more question though, my bus speed is always at 99.98mhz even though it's at 100mhz in the bios. Is there any way to get around that?

.02 mhz isn't much. Mine is saying 99.76mhz. I think it is just software reading it wrong, I wouldn't worry much about it. ;)

It can get annoying sometimes. For example, validating CPU-Z.

I wouldn't know about that, I've never validated with cpu-z lol. I just check my speeds with it to make sure my overclocks set :D

Meh give some details like what your vcore is under load. Complety not sure if this is still the case with z87 but with cheap boards you didn't have LLC. I remember a board I had before required 1.550Vcore in bios to give me 1.36V under load >.<
