Student in need of storage help/tips

Hi,

 

Very recently I have experienced a data loss of my uni work. I have managed to get most of it back, but to make sure it won't happen again I have decided to invest some money in  NAS. The problem I have now is that I know the NAS needs to plug into the back of the router. But, becasue I live in student accommodation  the router is down stairs and running a cable from it to my room upstairs is going to be a nightmare.  How much data are you backing up?

 

If your goal is just to keep your data safe, something like google drive or simmilar is probably a better option here. Most schools also already have unlimited gsuite accounts aswell.

 

Id plug the nas into the router, then just access it over wifi, or plug it into the back of your pc, but doing anything over wifi is gonna be slow.

Why not just get an external hard drive? Plus use Drive or BackBlaze as @Electronics Wizardy suggested.

Do other people use this router? If so, I would use an external hdd.

BAcking up roughly 500GBs, other people do you use router but obviously I plan to encrypt it so they cant access the data.

With that much data a cloud option would be much better here. and probably cheaper.

 

If you want your own drive, id just plug it into your pc with a usb drive. Or if you want a nas, just run a cable to your pc directly.

I'd go with a Google drive or if you primarily use a Windows PC then Onedrive would be best. I have tons of data on my external NAS but use Onedrive for my important documents that I need to access regularly and conveniently from anywhere.

A NAS is way overkill for what you need and will be far more hassle and expense to get the job done. Just get a couple 1TB drives and copy your data on each one. Keep one in a separate place from the other one, preferably offsite if possible. Just make sure you keep both updated as often as possible.

 

Backblaze is a good online backup. Just make sure you have more than one backup. I trust Google Drive, etc. as far as I can spit upwind in a stiff wind.
