Upgrading 5year old machine - will these parts work together?

paasne

Hi

I'm looking to get a better experience using my desktop. I am running a dual monitor setup, both 1080p, with one of them being 144hz.

I primarily use it for gaming, schoolwork and webbrowsing etc.

Games I play is wow, csgo, lol and I just picked up the witcher 3. I am primarily conserned about csgo, which I have been averaging ~110 fps in lately. This is with everything on medium, and optimized (per some youtube guides) for performance.

My current build

CPU: i5 4460

Motherboard: MSI B85-G43 GAMING

RAM: Crucial 2x8 GB DDR3 1600mhz

GPU: GTX 960 MSI 2gb

PSU: Corsair vs650

SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250gb

HDD: WD 3TB

Case: Define R2

What I thought might be a stable upgrade, after browsing around a bit. I do have ~80-100$ USD more to play around with if needed. I am really in doubt about the motherboard, as there are so many brands and it gets really confusing tbh.

That list isn't too bad but you will get a better experience with something like this:

PCPartPicker Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/vL6nHB

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor  ($174.99 @ B&H)
Motherboard: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($114.89 @ Amazon)

What is your budget though because one could get so much more out of it like add a more powerful GPU.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X | Motherboard: ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Formula | GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900XT | RAM: 2*16GB 3200MHz 14-14-14-34 G.Skill Trident Z Royal Silver | SSD: 2TB Gigabyte Aorus Gen 4; 500GB Samsung 860 EVO | CPU Cooler: Corsair H115i RGB Platinum | PSU: Corsair AX850 | Case: Corsair Crystal 680X | Monitor: Eve Spectrum 4K | Keyboard: Logitech G513 Romer-G Tactile | Mouse: Logitech G502 Lightspeed

this is what your upgrading too?

i presume you're asking if you can keep using:

or are you asking if you you can keep using those parts in a new build. But im no psu expert, but maybe go up to a 750w?

if thats then refer to the CPU support list for the motherboard.

the support list states that it supports the Ryzen 5 3600.

the general support page says:

Support for DDR4 3200(O.C.)/2933(O.C.)/2667*/2400/2133 MHz memory modules

so yes it does support the memory you want to use.

However as PCPartPicker states:

Potential Issues / Incompatibilities

Warning! Some AMD B350 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Matisse CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions.

How much more are we talking? I might be able to do 700$, as long as I can reuse the other parts from my current system

Yes. I would very much like to upgrade parts of my pc, for better performance, and keep the ones you quoted (Case, PSU, HDD, SSD).

The list was my own suggestion, after browsing different reviews/youtube videos. Very unsure if it is the correct fit, or other brands/models would be more beneficial.

And yeah, apparently I'm blind about the incompatibilities on PCPartPicker. I wont be able to upgrade the bios on it.

PSU: Corsair vs650

Since this is a 5 year old PC, do you have the orange label VS? I'd replace that unit if I were you.

750 watts is excessive for almost any system.  A quality 550 watt unit would be preferable, like a Corsair CX550.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Yes, the VS is an orange label. What's wrong with that model?

It's a super outdated design, really won't be a great selection for modern components.
