Should I get the 780 ti?

DopeZach

Just a quick simple question. I'm currently just playing on 1 monitor 1080p. I was thinking about getting a 770 though I don't really wanna buy another card for a while and I'd say the 780 ti will be pretty strong for a long time and I'd rather not buy a 770 then have to get a new card because it starts not being able to handle everything.

If you really want something that will be able to handle near everything, wait for Maxwell. There are bound to be more powerful GPUs in Maxwell, and even if the difference isn't substantial, there may be 700 series price drops.

If you're just at 1080p then a 780 will be fine for quite a while.

Grab a B Stock EVGA 780. They're not much more than a 770.

I don't think the 780Ti is really worth the 50% increase over a 780. It's more like the X series Intel chips.

I had a similar decision, wait or go for 780ti. I went for it. Honestly, the thing that put me over the edge was the $50 off the nvidia shield deal. The shield is right up my alley as a device.

But if you want to see the things I considered check this out below (this is all hearsay and speculation from me, don't take what anyone is saying about maxwell at their word, no one really knows):

1. It seems like Maxwell is going to basically be better energy efficiency rather than a full fledged upgrade. It seems like they've been having a hard time moving to the new die model (NOT to say it won't have a performance increase, I just don't think it's going to be the leap that Kepler was)

2. I too play at 1080p and have no intention moving up for a long time. I'm much more excited for G-Sync than I am for 4k or even 2k. I don't really care all that much about resolution upgrades at this point, I honestly even have trouble telling the difference between 720p and 1080p (albeit I don't have very great vision, so take that as it is).

3. The 780 you are looking at will be relevant for a very long time. Hell, I still game with my 9800GT on my old machine. But the nice thing about buying a really high-end card is future-proofing. I know some people don't like to hear it, but to me, it makes a ton of sense to buy a really high end card, and then a few years down the line SLI it for 1/5 the price.

4. Think about this for Maxwell: let's say the flagship cards come out which, at the very earliest is going to be the end of Q2. Then you wait a month to see the consensus, is it any good? Is it worth the price? Then you wait a month for a non-reference card. Let's be honest, reference coolers just don't cut it anymore. Then you have to wait a month to see which one is any good. By that time, there will be another thing just around the corner. The point is, there's ALWAYS something to wait for. Always.

That's my take on it. You got to do what's best for you, maybe my concerns flat out don't matter to how you want to game. That's totally your choice. Don't let anyone else make it for you.

There should be a decent price drop in the 700 series when Maxwell comes out, so it's a win win.

"may be" exactly, it is doubtful to me that 700 series will have a price drop when maxwell rolls out.

if you are looking for a price drop look to amd for obvious reasons.

to @DopeZach, I have a 780ti. it is incredible. that being said, if you are only playing at 1080p and

do not plan on buying a higher res monitor in the future I would say you're more than safe with the 770.

the 770 2gb gets a fps average of 40-50 in crysis 3 1080p with all settings maxed (which in my opinion is exsessive).

there will not be a game as system taxing as crysis 3 for quite some time and even then it probably wont surpass the

engine of crysis 3, maybe only match it.

but I feel like you already know you want, the 780ti, and thats a great option too. I bought mine with the

intention of keeping it for 2+ years.

Well now if you can wait for maxwell wait, if not get a 780 and sli when the maxwells cards end up causing the keplers prices to drop. I went with a 780 ti because I needed a new card and I didn't want to have to replace it for awhile but theres always the option of sli. The price difference was 150 bucks. The performance with a 780 and 2440p was good enough for me now, but in the future I figured it wouldn't be enough.

Here is a great comparison of a GTX 670 vs. GTX 780 vs. GTX 780ti @ 1080p and 1440p

The 780ti seems hardly worth the extra cost if you are willing to OC a GTX 780.

thats a great test, thanks for the link

I hear the OC xx and you'll have the performance of the more expensive xx argument.  but the thing is, you can always OC the more expensive xx also...  in this case, every game that the OC'd 780 caught upto the Ti, OC'ing the Ti pulled away again, usually roughly the same amount that OC'ing the 780 gave you (less so in 1440p)...  the most interesting thing in the test was that in some cases the min fps drop from a non OC'd Ti to and OC'd Ti.  I guess the 780 has the advantage in that department...

Understand completely. And the silicon lottery is always at play, but interesting results none the less.

from what Ive read it will be a very graphically intensive game. Im guessing this will be the one exception as most of the games coming out in the next year are using old engines.
