Bro, there is an entity wich controls the exchange rate, you cant switch currencies just like that.... for traveling you need to ask for "lets say a permit" which allows you a certain amount of money USD 2.500 via credit card and USD 400 for internet purchases an "official rate" currently set at 11.30 bolivares per USD (This also depends on where you are traveling, most places in America have even less amounts attributed when you apply for this)

Also because the ammounts of money you can travel with are so small and ultimately unsuficient we are forced to buy USD on the black market, prices of USD on it are up to 100 bolivares pero USD (yes, official exchaneg rate is 11.30 = 1 USD unoficial 100 = 1USD)

So you can't just get your things and move away, theres just no way to do that.

Another fellow countryman reporting in and yes everything is true (though I still have access to CNN and twitter they ended as a"threat" but they never do it. Yet) but what more annoying and frustrating about it is the lies, Maduro saying "this is the revolution, Chavez forever" and even more ridiculous crap EVERY FUCKING DAY, JUST BECAUSE HE CAN it's freaking insane also if you don't have cable and relies on open signal (like most of the people are here) might as well don't even bother because that the only thing you can watch, local broadcaster are either seized by the gov and if the aren't the don't do any kind of news because they get shut down, all of this media censoring is a straight offense to the free speech rights which is on our constitution, still this crap happens, also like the OP said, news are stupidly biased towards their own benefits, everytime there's a riot against them they call the opposition fascist, which very obviously aren't

another bullshit they call is that socialism is the path to freedom, when is a bloody excuse to communism because that's what it is, I'll put it this way, we have billions worth of petroleum more that every country in south America, since Chavez all of it is managed by the gov instead of private corporations (TBH the only good thing Chavez did) obviously nothing good came out of it (expect for having the cheapest gas in the world but that's just a political move) well all of the money ends in their pockets and those who buy, since we have to deal whit extreme shortage of essential goods, you need a lucky day to buy milk, flour, vegetable oil also shampoo, soap, shaving razors and cream, deodorant, etc and that's just the tip of the iceberg, your car broke the fuel pump, its dead in your garage for 3 months because its impossible to find a replacement, medicine, go and scramble through 10 pharmacies trying to find the one you need, I can still going whit this but by now you get the point

another issues is the stupidly high crime rate, if someone haven't get robbed in the last 15 years then they either have nothing like homeless status, sellouts to the gov or being the most lucky motherfucker alive, criminals are capable of shooting you for a phone or a wallet or purse, let alone a gold ring or something of value and if you don't have nothing on you they do it anyways just for the sake of it

I end my rant here since I'm on the phone writing this since being away for family stuff (nothing related to this shitstorm) but I don't like to talk about this online since it's what I use as a getaway to this crap because is the only place you can completely ignore it and don't have to deal whit it in my free time

That's because the government is trying to silence the media, the only places to get good info about this is ntn24, cnn and twitter, everything else is either giving biased info favoring the government or not giving info at all

indeed I had the same feeling to about being the only one here but that more attributed by the fact most people whit internet here spend most of their time browsing Facebook twitter or other social sharing site, not saying its a bad thing because is the only news source nowadays but people sometimes doesn't figure how broad the internet is also I agree on racing awareness about this shitstorm but glad you did it, because I wouldn't, when I get back home I'll add this thread to my sig to keep it going

I actually came here to post about it but did a quick search and you beat me to it...

In case you didn't notice I'm also from Venezuela, but I live in Costa Rica, and the only thing I can do for my country right now, is help communicate whats going on, serve a media center for my family and close friends who most of the time have issues getting access to REAL information...

And getting the word out! Letting people outside know about the incredible amount of human rights being violated!


The impotence is just too much... to the point you end up lashing out to relatives that won't go out because they are scared... (Which is not their fault, you have obvious reasons to be scared) but its just the worst feeling ever.

 

 

For those who can and want to share these events please do! Help Venzuela get rid of the current regime, which gives away our resources for other nations to look away, side with them (talking about Argentina/Bolivia/Nicaragua) in particular... oh and F*kn CUBA they have commited treason by placing Cubans inside our military and important positions within...

Pretty much my entire family on my mom's side is Colombian. I'm sad to hear what's going on in South America not just in Colombia, but in Venezuela as well. 

 

If I even heard the slightest mention of turning to socialism I would get the heck out of there. I hope things improve for all of you guys. Stay strong!
