Upgrade for 1080p/144hz

adamr539

Hi guys!

Currently I own a Intel machine,

MSI Z170A Sli Plus

i5 6400

16gb DDR4 2400

GTX 1060 3G

I wanna upgrade to

MSI B450 MAX PLUS GAMING

Ryzen 5 3600X

16gb DDR4

GTX 1660Ti

Usually the games I play are : Battlefield 3/4/V (Battlefield V probably not in 144hz, maybe on low if online ), RDR2, GTA V, Cyberpunk ( when it comes out, also not 144hz ) and Witcher 3.

I think it is a pretty good upgrade. From 4 cores to 8 cores ( I also edit some stuff and put on YouTube ), and a little GPU upgrade, I don't need RTX or anything.

Asus PRIME Z390-A | Intel Core i7 9700K | Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR4 2400 | MSI GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER VENTUS XS OC | 256 M.2 SSD | 2TB SSHD WD

Looks good overall, though the 3600 offers about the exact same performance for less so unless you're getting the 3600X on a discount you could save some cash there.

Also the 1660 super nearly matches the 1660 ti, another price comparison consideration to match

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

  1. the R5 3600, aswell as the X, are 6 core CPUs
  2. ditch the X. there are close to zero benefits. go for the 3600 NON x instead and spend the difference elsewere
  3. make sure to get at least 3200Mhz ram (3600Mhz prefered)
  4. whats your budget?
  5. i am not too familiar with the 1660Ti. maybe someone else could help out here as for 144fps are doable

perfect ^^

just remembered that Nvidia dropped prices of the 2060 to about 299ish iirc

so that would be just a lil bit more than for a 1660TI

A little over €700, but you do get a nice boost in performance over the 1660Ti with the 2060. An RX 5700 would also be a great option for 144Hz, but that's another €20-30 over the 2060.

If you cannot go over €700 at all, I would rather suggest you go for a 1660 Super, as it matches the 1660Ti in terms of performance, but comes in at a slightly lower price.

Another thing you could do is ditch the RAM upgrade and stick with your 2400MHz kit for now, go for a 5700XT or 2060 Super, and upgrade the memory later to a 3200/3600MHz kit. You won't be getting quite the full potential out of the 3600, but you'll have your rig up and running and you'll have a significantly faster GPU. Since how much RAM speed affects performance varies from title to title, this could potentially be a better route for the highest performance for the money.

i would say this...get the Ryzen 5 3600 (non X) cause it's the same CPU but cheaper...also i would re-use your current RAM to same money and have more to spend on your graphics card upgrade...because from GTX 1060 to 1660ti really ain't that big of a jump we're talking +25% which will not make much a difference in games...would allow you to turn on a couple more settings or get a slight FPS boost but nothing worth writhing home about...

that will greatly depend on what game you play...modern open world game such a red dead redemption for example will completely destroy that quad core and you'd have a hard time getting a good experience out of a new graphics card...but more linear games focused more on GPU performance such as metro exodus for example would do better.

I see you play battlefield 5...that game will not run well on i5-6400.

Basically...most if not all the games you've listed are CPU heavy...

I play Battlefield V now in 1080p and get around 65-70 fps. So it is not bad, enjoyable performance but would love it to get better

i'm sure if you hit a conquest maps on a server where there are more than 40 players or so and you go into the battle action that FPS figure will go down significantly...see, the rig in my signature is what i use and i do play BF5 on ultra settings and on such conditions i do get around 80FPS maybe even a bit lower...at 1440p sure but still. :)

What I can say from personal experience is that my old overclocked 4670K was getting hammered in BF5 with both an R9 290 or an RTX 2070, and both at 1080p or 1440p, making the game pretty much unplayable, so I wouldn't really recommend it.
