CPU stuck to a cooler.

Go to solution Solved by Brent744,

Yup, ran into this so many times while changing an AMD chip. Has always been an issue with AMD chips. I would always use a flathead screwdriver. Place it in between the top of the cpu and heatsink and apply a small amount of upward pressure, comes right off.

Hi

So here's an issue. I have Ryzen 5 1600 that is totally glued to its stock cooler. It has been in a system for almost 2 years. Cooler was never touched and paste was never replaced.

I couldn't twist the cooler off so I just ripped it out of the socket. Yeah I know, it's a stupid thing to do intentionally,  but it is what it is. But I know many cases where someone did that and nothing happened.

So how do I go about divorcing this couple? I tried force, tried cutting it with a sewing thread. Nothing helps. My next plan was to try get some alcohol in there to soften the paste.

Do you have any other ideas?

I'd try a little alcohol or even some Goo-Gone to soften it.  Just make sure the stuff doesn't get into the pins, and I think it'll be alright.

Alcohol is probably the easiest way. Either pour some IPA on there or put some in a container and the CPU in there and then, after a while, twist the CPU off. Don't try to pull it straight off, twisting generally works better.

I'm not familiar with "Goo-Gone", but IPA doesn't matter, if it gets into the pins.

Goo gone is a liquid for removing the adhesive of package stickers.  It’s got some fairly hardcore solvents in it.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

What it is is a miracle. :)  I've been using the stuff for over 20 years to remove leftover adhesive from labels, and have found it also works well to remove thermal paste as long as alcohol is used afterward to clean off the bit of film left behind.

A pretty toxic miracle.  Best not to get it on your skin.  Toluene and methyl ethyl keytone.

Yes, but only in small amounts.  The stuff's gotten on my hands plenty of times and never burned or caused problems, but you do want to wash your hands if it gets on them.  I can confirm that using it hasn't killed me. :)

I had the same problem with a laptop that was about 10 years old. I think I tried dental floss (seriously...lol) and kind of sawed the adhesive between the CPU and cooler. After about 10 minutes I was able to twist and pull the cooler off.

Those chemicals don’t kill.  They cause genetic damage.  The issue is they’re really good solvents.  They dissolve everything.  Including you.

Dental floss is good solution, you can try heating it up (next time run some benchmarks to heat up cpu before doing it)

same thing happened to me once, put a little rubbing alcohol in there for about 2 or 3 mins then used an old credit card to pry it off.

That did it. Thanks. Do they use concrete as thermal paste?
