Front panel connectors direction help

wittydavid

Here I am - a first time builder almost done with most of the build and now stuck in the front panel connectors step.

Of course I tried looking into the manual but I couldn't understand the direction of these three connections -

  1. power sw
  2. reset sw
  3. h.d.d led

The power led connections were straight forward because they were separate to a + and - cable - easy to differentiate.

However the other three cables are 2 pin connectors without a clear indication for the + or -, or ground on them.

here is the motherboard manual and my colorful markings - Am I right with how I plan on connecting them?

here are the cables - which is GND on power and reset sw?
Am I right with the H.d.d LED + and -?

Just make sure the HDD LED goes in the right way. Power or reset can be installed either way, it doesn't matter.

the switches only complete a circuit they can go either way , and you had the hdd led correct in your drawing

So I just want to make sure I got it correctly

  1. My coloured manual connection layout is correct
  2. reset sw and power sw can go either way
  3. My + and - orientation on the h.d.d led is correct

"yes" on all three? ???

HDD LED has plus and minus. I think the + and - already correspond to the right sides (as you pointed out in your drawing).

Power and reset switch don't have polarity.

Just double check the HDD LED cable.

Yes to the first two, probably yes to nr. 3

You can even re-seat it while the computer is on

and yes even if it's backwards you really can just unplug and plug it in while the machine is on

By far the worst thing about building a PC.

First time I got it right...

After a lot of changing stuff (CPU etc) I never got the hdd led working again,  except that one time where it worked for like 5 minutes... Since then it never worked again lol...

It's not an issue per say but sure infuriating :/

You're joking, but it's physical impossible, unless you had a tiny fairy do the job for you or something.

Do you see the fp connectors...?

Exactly.  ?

Reset and Power Switch are SWITCHES .... when you press the button, the two wires are momentarily connected. So there's no concept of polarity, and you can insert the connector either way.

LEDs have polarity, that's why you have the + and - characters on the connectors and in the manual. However, nothing bad will happen if you insert them the wrong way, the leds will simply not light up.

You match + with + and - with -.

Usually, the connectors are designed on purpose to have the text printed on them on the same side / direction

So, if one connector has to be inserted with the text towards the top of the board, it's highly likely all the other connectors will be inserted with the text towards the top of the motherboard.
