Seeking Gaming Hardware Advice

Greetings,

I built a computer around two years ago when I finally found a graphics card for retail price when crypto currency mining was really wild. I was running an eight year old desktop back then so I'm used to being behind the gaming hardware curve and don't especially mind it. I tend to play single player older games.

This is my current setup now:

Intel Core i5-8400 Desktop Processor 6 Cores up to 4.0GHz Turbo LGA1151 300 Series 65W BX80684i58400

GIGABYTE Z370P D3 (Intel LGA1151/ Z370/ ATX/ M.2/ GbE LAN with 25KV protection/ RGB Fusion/ Smart Fan 5/ USB 3.1/ ALC887/ HDMI/ Anti-Sulfur Resistors/

I'm looking to buy a graphics card and a 1440 144hz monitor.

Right now I'm thinking this monitor:

And either RTX 2070 Super or RX 5700, leaning towards the RX 5700.

I didn't really realize how much more powerful these other offerings were than the 1050 Ti.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

rx 5700 is on par with 2060 super

rx 5700xt is on par with 2070 super

the rest of your system looks pretty good and will probably keep up quite well with any of those cards

choose depending on your budget, I guess.

Seems like a worth while upgrade.

If you have window on the pc case I’d get that nvidia card. Looks are a big factor to me on cards.

As long as the games are super cpu intensive, should be good overall

I would go with a 5700 XT but keep in mind, none of those cards are powerful enough for 1440p at 144hz on the most demanding titles out there.   A 2070 Super can only maintain about 70 fps on RDR2 at High Settings with a 9900k OC'ed to 5.0 Ghz under the hood.   The good new is that with the majority of games out today, you would absolutely be able to take advantage of both 1440p and a 144 Hz refresh rate with either the 5700xt or a 2070 Super.  They are great cards as long as you recognize where their limits lie.

if you can resell your card in 6 months, get this and buy next gen that's sure to come out by then

if not, spend a bit more on the 5700 xt, or just flash the 300usd 5700 with the xt bios.

next gen consoles just got confirmed with next gen gpus, even a dedicated version will likely kill current mid-range gpus, i don't recommend spending 350+ until next gen.

Unfortunately it is looking like it might be 6-8 months from now at least.  AMD is rumored to be making an announcement at CES 2020 in regards to their high end GPU (2080/2080 ti competition) and Nvidia might release/announce the 2080 Ti Super to counter this but even if the 5800/5900 series is announced by AMD, it will be at least 3 months before they release for sale.  Amphere, Nvidia's high end is supposed to release somewhere around Q3 2020 as well.

Also, the Radeon 5500/5700 series of cards is technically next gen so you can sort of say that the next gen cards are already here.

I'm thinking about getting red dead redemption, rainbow six siege and battlefield one. I've been playing the batman trilogy, stellaris, and a little CS GO.

AMD card do a little better in Battlefield titles IIRC, but RTX cards can do RTX ray-tracing in Battlefield V and some other titles if you wanna muck around with that. Cyberpunk 2077 is supposed to have RTX support as well, screencaps look to be pretty damn gorgeous so if you're an eye candy man and plan to play it, that's another consideration. RTX cards also have the new NVENC encoder for recording/streaming if you plan to do that, it's very nice. If you don't care about those much, the AMD cards do the about same on average (5700/2060 Super and 5700XT/2070 Super) while costing less.

If you're determined to get 1440p144fps in all titles, even single player ones, then depending on the game it can take an insane amount of GPU power (especially RDR2, that stomps basically every GPU on the market into the ground). If you're down to run a lower resolution then upscale and sharpen, Nvidia offers DLSS and AMD offers RIS (Radeon Image Scaling). AMD wins out here, on average RIS looks much closer to native res than DLSS, though it can oversharpen some stuff.

Thanks for the help! It's been awhile since I was actually up on computer hardware.

Lol yeah, especially if you haven't been in since the mining craze. Prices have changed wildly since that whole fiasco.

Also if you quote people with the little arrow on their post it gives them a notif, we can get back to you sooner. Or you can tag like so: @Zando Bob
