2070 super or 2080 ?

My monitor resolution is 1440p 144Hz.

Which GPU should I get? 

 

EVGA 2070 super black edition $580

EVGA 2070 super XC gaming $606

EVGA 2080 XC ultra $645

 

Does 2080 worth the price difference?

 

Edit : 5700XT is not in my consideration due to its buggy driver.

2070 super is like 2080, but its newer.

if you can live without rtx, radeon 5700 xt, but if you need to have that green sauce, the 2070 super is a gimped 2080 so it should get you 1440p 100fps max settings vs the 2080 getting you 1440p 120fps

newer isn't necessarily better, they both do very different things at different price points, and since they're the same chip, they'll do similar performance at the same resolution minus the removed cores and reduced clock speed on the 2070 super

The RTX 2080 is just a slight bit faster than the 2070 Super.

When I got my videocard, there was a very large price difference, which made me go for the RTX 2070 Super. I got the XC Gaming model, which is pretty good; does have some coil whine though.

I like this chart,  shows that "just a little bit" is often the difference between slightly under 60fps or over... 

 

And yes I know that's 4k resolution but doesn't matter, these things scale and games will only get more demanding on average.

Also honestly I would get neither of those these EVGA series isn't considered very good and with spending so much money I would look for more high quality products,  just as an aside.

May I ask what the issue would be with those EVGA cards? Any issues with them, other than coil whine?

EVGA is fine,  it's just especially the black edition isn't considered very good, it's also a price question of course.

 

I think in that case I'd still go with the 2080 XC Ultra. 

 

Seems the best choice out of those to me.

Cooling isn't the best I heard,  but what are your temps? Maybe it's ok. 

Coilwhine would be a no go for me tbh,  but ymmv with these things too.

I have the 2070 Super XC Gaming, to be clear. Not overclocked with stock fan settings.

 

At the moment I am not at my PC, so can only remote into it and check how it is doing now.. It's currently running F@H, which pushes the CUDA cores 100% (actually closer to 95%), which in my experience is not as intensive as gaming.. So will run a benchmark for that later today.

Temperatures (according to HWMonitor and EVGA PrecisionX) are at 69 degrees C (nice..), with ambient temps of around (I would guess) 18-20 degrees C.

It's not that loud to me either, but I have noticed tasks like gaming get it to be louder than folding..

 

The coilwhine is something I don't really notice too much, but I am not happy with it either.. Don't really want to bother with RMA'ing it either

 

It really depends on the price point you could get any GPU I guess. For me the XC Gaming was in a similar price point as blower-style cards. Things like an ASUS Rog, Gigabyte Aorus 3 fan or MSI Gaming X were only available at higher prices..

 

With my limited perspective, it looks like a good purchase. Of course that is me justifying my spending partially, but also because I don't have other cards to compare it too.

That's another thing there are so many different versions of these cards in general... You gotta wonder why... It really seems to me to mostly confuse the consumer lol  

 

And then the ones with supposedly great cooling are of course the most expensive usually... 

 

So yeah,  I agree it depends on budget and an "average" card might be still pretty good objectively. 

 

Really out of these 3 cards the 2080 seems like a no brainer to me. 

 

Otherwise MSI gaming X / Trio (yay confusing naming schemes again)  or EVGA FTW would be preferable but I guess also way more pricey heh.

2070 Super.  Honestly both the 2080 and the 2070 Super have close enough performance that is all comes down to price in my opinion.  

 

If I have to be honest though, I would recommend a 5700 XT.  They just released a major driver update and they are claiming that all the known driver issues that had me hesitating to buy one have been fixed. That being the case, the $100 savings you get with buying the 5700 XT trumps anything that the 2070 Super can throw at it.  This is especially true since enabling RTX on a 2070 Super tends to reduce the fps performance to unacceptable levels in most if not all games that can take advantage of ray tracing, making RTX features on the 2070 Super kind of worthless. 

 

I mean don't get me wrong, overall the 5700 XT is about 5% slower  but there are quite a few games where the 5700 XT beats the 2070 Super and it absolutely slaughters the 2070 Super in RDR2 so when you combine that with being $100 cheaper, the 5700 XT becomes a no brainer for me.
