Moving over to SSD

So I ordered an SSD finally last week, and now that it's here I'm ready to install it and switch to booting etc from my SSD instead of my HDD (gonna leave my movies on the HDD though). Can anyone recommend software for cloning my HDD to my SSD, with the ability to select what gets copied over? Pretty much gonna clone everything on my main HDD minus the aforementioned movies. Also, as this is the first time I've switched from my main HDD as my boot device (and main drive) in as-long-as-I-can-remember, feel free to offer any tips that I should keep in mind. Thanks!

I've used it many times and it works great. But not sure if you can choose the files you want as it simply clones the hard drive, but you can delete the unwanted files after the fact.

Jesus!!! XD I've been using an SSD for boot since 2009, I can't imagine ever going back to a HDD (for my OS drive). The speed difference is ENORMOUS in everything from program installs, launching software, web browsing to system responsiveness.

You shouldn't clone an HDD to an SSD.

Do a clean install of windows and reinstall your programs.

Then just plug in your HDD and drag files like pictures or documents or whatever over using file explorer.

Yeah, and if you want to avoid problems in the future then that's what you gotta do.

If you would rather deal with the issues in the future and do a reinstall then, up to you.

There's a lot of nonsense be spouted here. I've used Macrium Reflect (I recommnd the free version) to cloned HDDs to SSDs several times without any problems. Technically, a clean install of the OS and programs is best but, if the installation on the HDD is working fine, you will never notice the difference between a clean install and a clone. You will spend one heck of a lot less time cloning the drive than doing a clean install, finding and installing drivers, and resetting all your settings.

 

Sadly, I do not know a way to selectively clone OS and data. If you don't already have a backup for the files you do not want to put on the SSD, get an external drive to use for backups and copy the files you don't want on the SSD to the backup drive, then delete those files on the first HDD. After cloning and you are satisfied with how the SSD works, format the HDD and copy your files back from the backup drive.

One has to be proactive, not reactive, to ensure the safety of one's data so backup your data! And RAID is NOT a backup!

Decided to go with the "fresh install OS and re-install all programs" route, and I'm feeling pretty crushed under the weight of all that I now have to look into reinstalling.....

I guess there's no other way around it in the end
