It makes more sense to pay less for a card several times than pay once for a higher end card and have it peter out faster.

Nvidia has screwed up the lineup now with super and everything in between but generally the TI cards were the best bang for the buck and performed better than the Titan. But the Titan would come out around 6 months beforehand so people could justify the early adopters price. But the prices of GPUs now days is stupid

Mmmm....I think saying many enthusiasts use SLI is a little much. It's a very, very small percentage of only the most devoted enthusiasts.

For 98% of people it's simply not worth it.

Press x to doubt. Have you seen GTX 780 temps in 0-slot spacing SLI in an mATX chassis? 88C or so on the top card without touching voltage so far

Dual cards have always looked better IMO, it's part of why I like them. Main issues to contend with are bad frametimes in some games (again I think the CPU is massively holding me back, in newer stuff it pins at 98-100% with no letup) and for these specifically, the 3GB VRAM. Does massively help if your cards on their own perform well, and for their age the 780s do. Still on par with about a 1060 3GB IIRC, and they beat the Titans of their time (780 Tis are even more impressive).

 

With 980 Tis, they're already plenty capable on their own, in well scaling games they'd be amazing. I still want quad SLI 980 Tis, but I'd need moar PSU and it'd really only be useful for bench runs and looking very impressive.

Indeed. It's sad that they still make massive high performance motherboards and cases, but keep pushing out SLI as a more mainstream option. Custom watercooling helps to fill a case, but with an EATX or larger board it still looks kinda empty unless you add more GPUs or PCIe cards. Hard to strike a balance between showing off your hardware and not ending up with a massive empty looking space. 

See my Evolv (got it as an 18th birthday send-off gift, since a case is one of the few things I don't need to upgrade incessantly) back when I had an ATX board and 1050 Ti:

That bottom section still looks kinda empty tho. Planning to swap out the HDDs for a second rad in the front, may shuffle the pump or res around to fill that space, IDK. But Crossfire isn't an option on the RVII (and they're still $500 or so) so I can't go dual card unless I switch GPUs, which ends up being even more expensive. No matter how much I like the idea of SLI 2070 Supers, that's still around $1k for just the GPUs and then I'd need blocks, can't really swing that. Yet again part of the reason I like old cards lol, I got my 780s for $90 or so each. Great fun, solid performance in well scaling games, doesn't break the bank.

Yeah, just a big motherboard doesn't give the sense of depth that having multiple GPU's, tubing, etc. gives.

Indeed. Part of the reason I like really compact mATX and ATX cases. If you wanna see some really cool cramming, look up Cerberus (mATX) and Cerberus X (up to EATX and 4 GPUs) case builds, they're really satisfying. 

But more on topic, yeah SLI 980 Tis as a future upgrade would be awesome. A single 980 Ti already handles up to 1440p just fine, a pair just adds extra performance in games that scale. With my SLI 1080s and a 5Ghz 8600K, I could slap 200fps solid at 1440p ultra no AA in Battlefront 2015 (I think it was capped because it never dropped below that), and 134-144fps at 4K ultra with no AA. 980 Tis aren't that much behind, you'll get some eye watering numbers out of them. Fun to mess around with in benching too. My 1080s did 2100Mhz clean on the core for 24/7 load with no issues, my 780s I've gotten to run up to 1333Mhz so far, and that was at 1.2-1.25v. And with some software/BIOS modding you can push 1.35v through these with no vdroop, though I don't have the cooling for that given how they're crammed, lol. 

What case and such are you running?

I dont actually have a windowed case lol, I've always been interested in the "aesthetic" of PC's, but i have a full tower Corsair Carbide 400R.

+1 respecc, "blank" cases can still look good. I have a Meshify C Mini with such a dark TG window that it's basically blank (I can see the mobo post codes and then the CPU cooler if I get up real close). And a Define S, which is fully windowless and still absolutely gorgeous in that classic, clean, Fractal way. Really well built and extremely silent too, just sadly there's nothing in it. Windowless cases do save you from the trouble of having to worry about every little front panel cable and everything too lol. That case does have a noice clean aesthetic to it too. Plus it's always satisfying to know that you know what's in there, even if it isn't apparent from the outside. @Den-Fi has built some absolutely gorgeous builds in stuff like the Haf Evo IIRC, which doesn't have any windows (closest thing is the big mesh/hole array for the top 200mm fan AFAIK).

Yeah, it does look really cool from the front... Apart from the AMD FX & HyperX sticker that I put on it 4 years ago. Oh, and the CDRW drive lmao. I'll probably remove them when i put the new card in, which im getting tomorrow

Some ROG panel thing. Uses the ROG EXT header. Used to be able to control a bunch of stuff and OC from it, but it's gotten less useful as it was out well before Ryzen, so it has no idea what the heck to do and no more firmware updates for it. Just a clock and fan speed display now.

Yeah. The empty 2.5 bay was driving me nuts. It's so much more interesting this way.

 

 

If there's enough light you get a pretty good idea of what's inside.
