144hz only compatible with DVI?

Will01

So i have a BenQ xl2411t monitor. it has hdmi, dvi and vga. so obviously vga is out of the question. apparently the hdmi is 1.4, so the same with that. So it leaves us with DVI. I've had that working for the last 2ish years with my gtx1060. but now ive just gone and upgraded to a 5700xt. It only has hdmi and display port. So, i have nowhere to plug my dvi cable. and people on the internet seem to be confused and say a simple adapter will not work? Any idea. one forum came to the conclusion to "just buy a new monitor". surely this isnt the case? hahaha

Cheap HDMI->DVI adapters are DVI Single Link which means you'll be limited to 60 Hz.

HDMI/DP to DVI-DL (dual link) adapters/converters are rare and expensive.

I just got boned by the same thing. I had an acer that was 144hz over DVI-D only. The cheapest adapter i could find (it has to be truely active) was about $160 so i just went out and upgraded to 1440 at 144hz with DP. Best i could do with my acer was overclock to 72hz on HDMI to get a half refresh to the 144hz for stutter issues. The adapters even if they say Dual Link have to be powered to work. they cant be a straight adapter.

i7-6700k 4.7ghz (1.375v)

Asus Maximus Hero VIII

64gb Kingston DDR4 2133mhz (4 x 16gb) OC to 2666mhz

Gigabyte 2070 Super GAMING OC WHITE (2085mhz core 15,400mhz memory)

Corsair H100i AIO

EVGA 850 Gold PSU

M.2 NVMe 1TB Drive

2 x 512GB SSDs Raid 0

2 x 2TB HDDs

Any actual computer hardware specialist you talk to will tell you DVI is now considered Legacy and has been all but dropped by manufacturers. Bit the bullet now, the next upgrade will be no different.

I bought this one cause of its sale price. Works great so far. https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX61439

The standard at the time i dont think could. At best 1080p at 120 was all you could do on HDMI 1.4

fair, should have used dp then? the monitor has been designed to die... its not that old, dvi would have been on its last legs even back then

Pissed me off to find it out too. DP has been around a long time. I dont know if it was planned obsolescence or short sighted on their part. I dont know when the models came out. i bought my 144hz DVI-D Acer 2 years ago only and now i cant really use it but was it on the market for 4 or 5 by then? They may have thought at the time that DVI-D was going to survive the test of time...

You could always do the search. Never know, a board partner might have a entry level version with a DVI-D on it.

Lots of cheap adapters, only people this really effects is the over 60hz crowd. Anyone else can use the cheap hdmi->DVI Single Link adapters.

Heh. I’m having a similar problem. Single channel DVI is only good up to 1080p and I’ve had a heckuva time getting anything to translate.  Dual channel DVI is required, but dual channel dvi hasn’t been made for a long time.  DisplayPort  -> DisplayPort to dual link dviD adaptor -> monitor  is giving me only 1280x800 and I can’t seem to get it higher.

im looking at buying a new monitor too.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Sounds a bit like the problem I’m running into.  My monitor is a crossover 30q5 pro.  That dvi has to be dual link dvi and so far I’m finding that to be bad juju

yeah but in no way worth it. i saw one for like 150 or something hahaha. and they are apparently hella unreliable and cause loads of problems with sleep/wake etc.
