trying to help my father get better internet. Anyone know about coax/cable boosters and how they work?

Kendiggity

Im just going to add to this and let you guys know that there is a shed down bottom of the driveway. where there is power. we were originally thinking of getting ubiquiti equipment and putting it up on poles to send data to each other. however that seems a little asinine.

and getting "better satellite internet is not an option, he has the max right now.

the problem is theres foliage, however me and my father were talking, were not against putting a tower sort of set up on top of his house so he can aim downward toward the bottom of the driveway and try to bypass the trees

Do you get cell service at his house?

What about a hotspot off your phone or those Clear things?

If you can get power at the end of the driveway...

microwave dish setup to avoid digging/burying cables...

I wonder what the limit on an MOCA adapter is?

300 feet end to end I have read. Also Moca is like WiFi its only half duplex.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

For example Hughesnet in the US has 25Mb/sec internet at the very least.

Yeah but they have usage caps, and they will slow you service down to 1-3 Mbps once you go over. Honestly your better off without internet at that point.

Yeah but your only options are to burry a cable or use wireless. Without knowing the signal coming from the tap, I would be hesitant on burrying Coax. Your best bet would be to have services install at the shed and run fiber from the shed to the house. But keep in mind that could be expensive. Im not sure how much Fiber cabling is going for these days. The easiest option would be to install the equpment at the shed and use Point to Point wireless.

OR you could pay the $7000 which really isnt bad. Ive seen quotes as high as $50,000, and let the cable company do their thing.

You're so right, it's much better to have nothing than something!

I mean, why have mediocre internet to surf the web, get email, shop, look up movie times, make dinner reservations, etc.

Totally man, you nailed it!!!

Were trying to get him to avoid paying $7,000 which is a damn lot of money for internet installation, and then a monthly on top of that.

So after researching were going to run it something like this

cable line                                                                            fiber cable                                                                                            cable line                     ethernet
========[Cable to fiber conversion]----------------------------------------------------------------------------------[fiber to cable conversion]==========[modem]---------------[router]

my question is will this affect the router? or no, and can anyone recommend a device to do the conversions?

The router wont care. The modem how ever might. Id convert your after you modem.

Coax-----Modem---Ethernet----(Ethernet to Fiber converter)----Fiber----(Fiber to Ethernet Converter)-----Router.

The modem is going to look for an RF signal. While you can do RF over Fiber, I dont think they make an affordable equpimpent. Mean thats essentailly how the cable co does it. They run Fiber out to the neighborhood and convert it to RF and the Coax carries it the rest of the way. Ive heard Optical Nodes costs a chunk of change.
