Rosewill PHOTON 650W vs Corsair RM650x PSU?

FaxedForward

Hello all,

I'm piecing together a new build to run a Ryzen 3600/ASUS X570 combo with the goal of having some room to grow (Zen 3 processor in the future, etc). Reusing my current GTX 970 for now but plan to go Nvidia Ampere once those cards release (probably whatever the 2070 equivalent will be).

Based on the existing tier lists I had my sights set on the Corsair RM650x PSU as it seemed perfect for my planned build. However Newegg has a DEEP discount on the Rosewill PHOTON 650W right now. On the old tier list, at least, these PSUs were neck and neck...

Should I pull the trigger on this Rosewill for $65 or hold out for the Corsair to go on sale?

The photon is by all means a good PSU, on discount it's a good buy.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

The tier lists in this forum are a hot mess and barely worth considering.  The Corsair RMx should be at least a tier up and has a solid advantage over the Photon.

That said, I agree with Fasauceome that the Photon is a great value at that price point.

I would consider the RMx to be the better power supply of the two. Higher temp rating (50C vs 40C), better fan (rifle vs sleeve), better modular cables (according to JG review the PCIe and CPU power connectors are not interchangeable on the Photon, so you could mistakenly put the cables in to the wrong plugs on the PSU and the PSU won't work), plus the RMx uses Corsair Type 4 cables which are super easy to find custom cables for if you want to go that route, longer warranty (10 years vs 5 years).

This doesn't mean that I think the Photon is a bad power supply, just that I think the RMx is the better of the two options.

I wouldn't pay $120 for the Photon (MSRP on Newegg)... but with a $55 discount that changes its value drastically. For $65 it's a great deal.

I am really curious to see what ultimately shows up. I don't intend to open it until the rest of my build is ready to go (just in case the RM650x goes on sale for a great price and I can return this), but this Newegg review stating it actually has a 140mm fluid bearing fan and 650W @ 50C rating has my curiosity piqued:

650 Photon has been updated, the information everywhere online is wrong, seems there is a Revision B

Pros: Contrary to all the false information on forums, reviews, it's quiet and cool.
Easy to use.
Comes with everything you need, including zip ties, plenty of cables all your needs

Cons: The CPU cable could be longer for full sized boards.
The SATA cables are bit messy with 3-4 ports each, but seems most power supplies use SATA power cables like this.

Overall Review: Specs:
650 Watt @ 50C, not 40C. That was a big neg on bunch of reviews and forums.
140mm Hydraulic Fan, not 135 standard ball bearing
100% Japanese Capoacitors
80 Plus Gold Certified, not pending, certified
5 year warranty

I wonder if that's true? Would you take effort to take a lot of photos of the box, manual, specification table, and clear pics through the fan grille and back side?

Certainly, if I end up opening and using it I will document it well!
