970 EVO Plus drive overheating

I am running a Samsung 970 EVO Plus on an ASRock Phantom Gaming Z390 itx mobo, and I keep getting alerts about my SSD running too hot (50 C). The drive is mounted in the M.2_2 slot, the one with the heat sink, and I have 660p in the M.2_1 slot on the back side of the mobo that is running smooth and cool. At first I thought that the drive was being heated up my excess heat from the CPU, but it is actually running hotter than the CPU 90% of the time.

 

Will temps of 50C be a danger for my drive? And if so, what can I do about it? Spread thermal paste between the thermal pad and the heat sink? Will that even work?

50C isn't hot at all for an SSD under load. if it's doing that at idle, see if ramping up the graphics card's fans help

Try adding some casefans to get more airflow over the heatsink?

some heatsink don't make a proper contact with the drive, i say you either don't use the heatsink or you fix the thermal padding.

m.2 ssd should be good without one anyway.

ssds are designed for up to 70c, you're fine. Thermal paste should help a little, esp. if there  are no pads currently.

SSDs like to run hot,low temperatures harm SSDs,

In case the micro-controller is thermal throttling just put a little heatsink on it,the rest of the SSD will be harmed if running it at low temperatures.

What software is giving you the warning? Likely isn't designed for use with SSDs.

I have the same mobo, the CPU won't heat up your SSD but the cooler is actually mainly for the chipset that's right under it, which will heat up

I actually haven't mounted the part that goes on to of the SSD to improve airflow.

 

There's a saying that often the mobo-supplied SSD heat sinks are actually heat traps...

Chill out, it's only going to run at 60 instead of 80 and throttling... And no 10°C won't make it fail in any appreciably quicker timeframe. Also there's a very serious lack of actual data backing that "low temperature is bad" argument.

I get the warning from unraid, and it is aware that the drive is an SSD. I´ll disable the warning for now, and not worry about it unless the temps start rising. Thanks!
