Hey Linus Tech Tips,

What are some of your thoughts on this interesting and somewhat fringe philosophy that is becoming more prevalent in places of higher education?

interesting but at the same time dangerous, i dont know much about it. close to nothing really but. if i understand it correctly then its cool. but it could cause issues like, the society with this "enchanted humans" will start to look down on the "normal" ones. Nobles vs commoners, Rich vs poor, Black vs white (..ok maybe not this)
however if this is aimed for medical reason then alright.

why is it every time someone starts a thread related to something mildly controversial someone posts something like this even though no flame war or mod lock happens? This isn't 4chan where everyone fights over everything.

I haven't been here long no but I haven't seen any flame wars so far related to a political topic it seems to mostly be flame wars over computers.

so basically Deus Ex: Human Revolution?

yeah pretty much cyberpunk sci fi and transhumanist philosophy go together like apple pie and vanilla ice cream

deus ex: human revolution was an amazing game, but one thing they didn't go into depth was the hacking of these chips. Since technically anything is hackable I wouldn't want something so close to my brain being so vulnerable, no matter how cool it is.

I am personally conflicted about it.

I don't want to be part machine. Nanomachines would be where I draw the line (they are ok, anything bigger and more "permanent" is a no imo).

I think transhumanism will likely be more prevalent in the biological side of things. Such as biologically engineering humans to simply be better humans. Not morally or anything like that, but in the basics of things. Less disease and illness, fewer defects (i.e. people who have to wear glasses, are born with handicaps and such), and the like.

It'll be controversial at first, but I think it will ultimately win out. The potential benefits are too great. The only real problem is the greed factor. Where the good things (stronger immune system and such) are reserved for the rich.

The reason I am conflicted about it is because I hate the idea that technology could ultimately replace human control. I hate the idea that, one day, people might have their technology program them to be a certain "thing", rather than simply becoming that themselves. i.e. breaking habits, and the like.

In other words, I hate the idea that humans, themselves, won't be the ultimate mechanism to change within themselves. Where they can just press a button on a whim and it be so. I would rather change be much harder to attain, and at the same time, much more valuable to be had.

Probably by the time I die (Around 2050-2070), they'll most likely be some type of body modifications that will be widely available and give you more strength, intelligence, etc. It's a bit scary though if you think about it, by basically doing this, we can create a whole new race since humanity will be almost unrecognizable at this point of modifying ourselfs.

I am all for transhumanism.

I want cyborg implants to make me smarter, see better, and react faster and become more physically fit.  I want bots inside me to augment my immune system to keep me disease free for longer, and to extend my life to around 200 years, with the body of a 30 year old.

I want to transfer my consciousness into an android/mainframe/matrix style system.

I want all of these things, and I will support whatever I can to make it happen faster.  No barriers, no restrictions, no stalling.  Khan Noonien Singh was insane and evil, but he had the right of it in one respect, he was BETTER in a lot of ways.

The greatest lie told by the anti transhuman cause is that random chance, the genetic lottery, is preferable to directed evolution and advancement.  "I" know what I want and value more than random chance.  Let ME decide the direction.

I am impelled not to squeak like a grateful and frightened mouse, but to roar...

Sure. Why not? I'll wait for Linus' unboxing of an upgrade kit sometime in the distant future.

the only thing that I would be concerned about is the software on the cybernetic implants and potential malicious features. As long as the operating system on my computerized eyeball isn't authored by apple, microsoft, or some other large corporation that would try to bombard ads into my head and is under the GNU GPL I'm all good.  Linux cybernetics lol

inb4 a hacker implants firmware into your eyes that make you see everyone as My Little Pony characters. Malware will be the new psychological disease.

... What a sadistic bastard.
