Cleaning Keyboard using 99% Alcohol bath?

Kenji the Uke

Hey so >w> My keyboard is getting kinda gross. Would it be okay to soak it in some isopropyl alcohol and scrub at the surface with a new toothbrush to clean up any grime, then let it air out for like a week? Would that kill it?

How about you take the keys off like a normal person and clean under them.

Plastic parts could be ok, paint maybe not so much.
But i wouldnt put the electronics in it. I'd make sure that dries immediately.

(Also some (older) keyboards use a thing plastic sheet with traces on them that would disolve instantly with that stuff (like the old blue Logitech G15 )).

When i ask for more specs, don't expect me to know the answer!

Well, would I still drizzle alcohol on the top and do the toothbrush thing? (Also the keycaps I have are SUUUPER hard to pull off, especially since I dont own a keycap puller..)

If you want it done right, take the time to do it. Else just get a cloth of some sort put some alcohol on that and rub it. Else, take the caps of and do it right. ? (also when the first couple keys are off you usually have an easier time with the rest.

Pretend I'm an idiot =w= I've never had to clean a keyboard before, because usually it stays clean. What IS the proper way, in your eyes, to clean it? Genuinely curious.

1) use a proper cloth or paper towel or something, don't just pour stuff on top.

2) it's not hard to pull keycaps off with your fingers, just start from the edges.

If it's not dirty, i don't think you need to clean it.

I did this before, it worked just fine after dry off.

Donnot shake it tho, it might damage the mechnism in the switch.

The alcohol can eat the paint on the key caps and some other stuff.

The proper way is to invest in a keycap puller and clean your caps as well as the internals that way. Using anything plastic to pull them out will also work the same functionally as a keycap puller.

Keycap pullers (especially plastic) are very very cheap : https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33007503628.html?spm=2114.search0302.3.9.59412dd2sxDgPn&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_0,searchweb201603_0,ppcSwitch_0&algo_pvid=6069ef7c-5d9e-40c3-b756-decf1e25e175&algo_expid=6069ef7c-5d9e-40c3-b756-decf1e25e175-1  wire ones are not that expensive too.

I just use regular alcohol for home use on some cotton pads and wipe on the surface and wrist rest. My hands are sweaty and I like to keep it clean like it's new.
