Android SUCKS at resource management!

I didn't realize how bad it actually was until I got an android and the phone slows and does stupid things because of how bad android uses resources.

Let me know if you agree, disagree, and have stories or examples of your phone being dumb.

Once every 1.5 weeks I use the "Smart cleaning" feature on my phone cuz otherwise things act up. Phone starts to get sluggish, certain apps start functioning improperly. Ex: Podcast app will not resume from being paused when my navigation app give a few directions. After "Smart Cleaning" which reduces ram usage and gets rid of some temporary files and some cache the app works perfectly fine.

The whole phone just slows down a lot. It's soo annoying.

I understand why people have iphones for reasons like this. I don't like ios or iphones though. I miss my old Windows Phone for things like this. Sure, had some problems but so does android. Windows Phone OS was on average smoother, and it didn't have as much ram and a worse processor compared to my phone now.

Hopefully when I get a new phone those problem will be solved.

Also, the way that android manages files seems weird. Just not well organized, sometimes confusing.

What device are you using? Most major manufacturer's (specifically Samsung and LGs builds are known for being super sluggish compared to the same device on stock (AOSP)) Custom builds of android are way slower and usually come with way too much bloatware (especially if it's a carrier/locked phone). If your device is root-able and has an AOSP ROM available this usually makes a huge difference, my Galaxy S5 is still quite responsive on an AOSP Pie compared to it being super slow on the stock Marshmallow ROM.

Outside of mobile games, I haven't noticed any performance problems like described. Using the likes of facebook, twitter, photos app, camera, youtube, twitch, maps, I can switch between them as much as I like without problem.

Now I said outside gaming... games are resource hogs and there the hardware makes more of a difference. I find manually closing all other apps first helps gaming performance. If I have to switch out of gaming to do something else, on lesser hardware it is almost single tasking and the background task has to be closed to run another. Since getting phones with more ram, I can then more easily switch between a game and other tasks without them closing in the background.

That's not to say Android is perfect, I think the biggest problem is the manufacturers don't put as much hardware in as iDevices. Getting fed up of that, I did get an iPad mini and it is clearly higher performance than the Huawei something I was using before. But it costs more too, as well as being a year or two newer. At least in the tablet space, Android hardware is not keeping up with iPads. I do not see the same problem in the phone space where there is far more choice.

Question back to OP, what is your device? I've been a long time Android user. Tablet wise I've gone through Nexus 7 (2012), nvidia Shield, Huawei something. Phone wise Nexus 4, Nexus 5x, Xiaomi Mi A1, Pixel 3A (current personal phone). Throw in my old work Samsung S6 too. iOS experience I currently have iPhone 8+ as work phone, and iPad mini (2019) tablet.

@Mnky313 @porina YUP it is a LG. LG G6. Someday Ill upgrade. I have thought about rooting it and installing a rom just never have. Maybe that could solve the issues. Maybe if it was a different device or new hardware I wouldn't have this problem. I may try eventually. It may feel like a new device. haha. It's just annoying. Android has some issues I've found and make me miss my other phone. Though, it has advantages which is why I am using it.

While I don't have experience of that specific phone, the specs don't look bad for its age. 4GB of ram isn't tight. Does it have an LG UI on it? I've pretty much stuck to stock or near stock Android devices. The exception is my old work Samsung S6 and I hated the UI on that. It is what drove me to get an iPhone as its replacement as work doesn't offer a choice other than Samsung or Apple, and I sure wasn't going to get another Samsung.

If it is the UI, then rooting it and loading an alternate image on might help, but it is a big step. I used to mess around with roms early on but found myself reverting back to stock.

I have a G6 as well, mine runs AOSiP Pie and is quite responsive but AOSiP has a couple issues (random crashes and some other small things) as well as not having voLTE (I hate both LG and Samsung for this!) but it's much faster and more responsive than the stock ROM.

I've had similar issues in the past, but it was mainly with Samsung or LG which tend to heavily skin Android and add their own spin on it. Ever since I switched to the Pixel lineup, even with inferior specs on paper it flies in the face of every other device I've owned. I think the biggest drain is lack of software optimization, which is a caveat to having an open sourced platform. It can do amazing things but at a cost, usually.

I also owned the G6, bought for its aesthetics. That phone's design was sexy, and to this day I believe it had the perfect ratio for bezels to screen. But yeah it slowed and got buggy less than a year in, and only a factory reset seemed to fix it. I liked the phone itself, but not the software nor LGs spin on everything. Try a Pixel man, I mean they're not without their faults but they may be just what you're looking for.

Same as always, if you want a fast phone that will stay relatively snappy for a few years then get an iPhone. Swapped my old SE earlier this year due to the battery going (my fault for abusing it) but otherwise it still works just fine.

Thanks fellow nerds for the responses. I may try a different Rom and see how that goes. It may get better cuz of it. Yup, android has it's faults but you're all probably right. The added crap that isn't as optimized might be slowing it down.

Yea, I do think there is some lack of software optimization at points in android. Might be more due to what the phone manufacturers do but still annoying.

Yea, it has a nice design. I wanted to get the next version up but it was just more expensive. So i got the G6 instead of the V40. I still like the LG phones cuz they are packing all these great things into their phones like a headphone jack (lol starting to get rare) and a good DAC for good portable audio player. They have put some really awesome things into their phone.

But there are some sexier, newer phone designs out there. I do just like where LG's mindset is with what features they are putting into their phones.

I also miss my Windows Phone for these reason. Was kinda in between an Iphone and android. MS just really drops the ball sometimes.

Think some lesser known brands like Oppo are doing interesting things.

LGs hardware is awesome, like on their V20 they packed in a lot of great features including a removable battery, something I really wish we'd go back to (but it won't happen). If you could pair the Pixel's software with LGs hardware and design, I think you'd have a damn near perfect phone.

An Android phone isn't for those somewhat "power users" who have no idea about tech, using "smart cleaner" makes me think you don't know what's going on inside your phone, don't blame Android, it's not perfect but it's not that bad for a damn LG G6, which is still a perfectly fine phone

You can A) buy an iPhone, B) get another Windows Phone or C) start learning about how to manage by yourself your resources and what is using most of your RAM/CPU time, etc

Android =/= bad

I agree with you for the most part, but even someone like me who pretty much disables and deletes as much bloatware as possible, it isn't always the fault of the user. Sometimes it is really is just poor management on the manufacturer when they add their skin to Android. And don't dock the smart cleaner, it does have some value ;)

I use smart cleaner cuz it's easy. I don't have to go in to different apps then or different stuff. Calm down bro. I have gone in and looked at things for individual apps. I have gone and cleared out resources individual, but i have smart cleaner so why do stuff individually? It's like using CCleaner on a PC. What uses most of my resources are simply the apps I use, like Castbox or facebook. It's nothing weird going on by me.

"An Android phone isn't for those somewhat "power users" who have no idea about tech" OH come on. That's kinda dumb. If you want a phone to be bought by the masses it has to work well for everyone. If it was to complicated people wouldn't use. I'm no lacky though. Just that smart cleaner is easier then looking at individual resources and apps. Why would I go through all the little stuff when I can have one app do it for me. That's just logicial dude.

YES the problem is with the software that is on my G6. It might be LG's fault more then Android. I'm just really annoyed that I buy a phone and it doesn't work properly.

CALM YOUR TITS BRO!!!
