Need advise on finding good parts for CPU refresh

Hey I feel like my system's CPU is currently bottle necking my FPS in a few titles. Looking for a parts list to get a newer CPU while keeping the most components from my current build possible. It's my understanding though my motherboard and RAM would have to be replaced to accept a newer CPU with their different sockets. Below is my current parts list of my build and requirements.

  • Budget: Lower the better for the moment
  • Location: Canada
  • Use (gaming, rendering, etc): Gaming
  • Peripherals required (monitor, keyboard/mouse, etc): No
  • Operating System required: No

Ryzen 5 3600 and a B450 board is the best value option. You get 8700 performance for half the price.

I haven't been following recent tech so excuse my ignorance so AMD right now would be better choice to the most recent i5? I know intel is usually overpried as well but has AMD catched up a lot of terms of single core performance to be on par with intel?

Also, while I have a GTX 1070 atm I might get a newer card in the next few years. Would the AMD still be a good option?

The Ryzen 3000 CPUs have higher IPC and thus match intel single core performance for the most part. They also usually have more cores or threads and crush them in multi threaded scenarios. When comparing the 3600 to the i5 9400F, the Ryzen 5 is faster, uses less power, runs cooler, has an upgrade path all the way up to 16 cores and potentially Zen3 next year AMD it doesn't suffer from the 6-7 severe security issues on intel CPUs that have recently been uncovered. The 3600 is just a more modern and advanced CPU when compared to current i5s and you don't get locked into a dead socket like with 1151

Alright guess I'll go to AMD then. And all the AMDs can be overclocked right no need to buy a specefic unlocked chip?

Yea but overclocking isn't actually beneficial for most users. If you just enable PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive) on your AIO it will auto tune itself far better than you could manually achieve. In short, on Ryzen, you should try to get higher memory speeds and tighter timings. The CPU automatically boosts itself to the limit once you give it the cooling and enable PBO.

Hey I just noticed something though, the h100i supported sockets don't seem to list AM4? Not sure if the product page is just outdated though or not considering AM4 is new and the h100i is a bit old.

Look for a mounting kit on their website. I believe they sell them.

Do I need to flash BIOS before? I ended up with a MSI Gaming plus b450 since store didn't have tomahawk and no display is showing up.

But to flash BIOS I'm gonna need display and I can't... am I screwed right now?
