How does getting internet work

jagomaster74

My mom is trying to buy internet that is strong enough for everyone to use it without lagging. She was going to just get an internet plan that is $40/m and that was 25mbs, but then we saw a modem that had up to 500mbs. She would have got it, but me or her dont really understand how it works. If you buy a modem, will you have to pay for a plan? Do you have to pay monthly? Do you just buy it and thats it? Whats the deal here, how does it work ( i dont really know much about internet so i just came here for help )

A modem is just kinda like an interpreter for the cable signal from your ISP

The modem means it can handle up to 500 mbps; not that it provides 500mbps.

I'd get a plan with higher speeds; 25mbps isn't that much and is pretty bad for 40$/month; you should be able to get 100mbps in the US or 1gbps in european countries. However there are countries where 25mbps is extremely cheap for 40$/month, so

Go on your ISP or whatever's website, and look at the plans. I can look at them for you if you say what the ISP is (for example Comcast in the US, MEO in Portugal, etc.)

Where tf do you live?

1gbps isn't even an option for me and yes i live in europe, max is iirc 200mbps and that's like 55 euros.

If you want some decent internet (100mbps) that's quickly heading to 35-40 euros a month.

Prices really aren't that great everywhere in europe, it changes a LOT from country to country.

Seems to me you got the cheapst plan, usually not a good deal.
In most cases it's worth upgrading a bit because you get a LOT more for your money.

This is what we get from the 2 major ISP's.

There are a few virtual ISP's but they are barely any better.

What state/city? Or maybe just zip code?

Xfinity covers a lot of places so knowing a bit more detail might help. Definitely don't give your full address though :)

You pay monthly for internet, most ISPs will provide you with a modem, some ISPs will provide it for free, others will charge you extra per month but give you the option to buy your own and not pay a fee every month for the modem.

In certain parts of Europe, yes! Mostly in northern countries like Sweden. But other than that, nope.

I'm paying 65€ for 100/20mbps in Germany and we just got upgraded last year. Before all I had was 2/0.2mbps.

Yes. In Eastern Europe you can get 1Gb/s for 20 euros. It all comes down to the country you are in and what the infrastructure is like.

Xfinity has plans from 25 Mbps to 1 Gbps. I myself am on their 150 Mbps service. We pay $103 a month. I own my own modem and router. Also if you buy a modem yourself, the speeds on the boxes at the stores are bull shit. Xfinity has a supported device list that will provide you with what kind of cable modem you need for the tier of service your subscribing to.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
