Im thinking of buying dayZ off of steam.

Im thinking of buying it but dont have arma 2. Is this a problem or do you not need arma for it? Remember im buying the DayZ off of steam.

You don't need Arma 2 for DayZ since DayZ is its own separate game now

What if you don't want to play the stand alone and want to play the mod instead?
It's my understanding that the mod is still way, way better than the stand alone game.

But the standalone will only get better as it makes it to version 1.0.

 I have 42 hours played and I haven't see a hacker yet in dayz standalone. It's alpha tho you have to remember that. You can also opt into the  beta testing version after buying the game . So you can play the latest update first before they roll it out to everyone playing the alpha. The only thing I really miss right now from the arma 2 dayz mod is vehicles. They are adding vehicles in future updates. You can be sure its going to be a great finished game. Dean Hall is committed and very open about development.

Personally I'd rather have a game I can play now.

Alphas are all fine and dandy but I wouldn't put money into one unless it was strictly to support the game development. Don't expect a super fun playable experience.

 

Right now, I'd say the mod would be a lot more fun than the stand alone.

It was revealed that they would be following Minecraft in their pricing model so when the game moves to Beta it will be a little bit more expensive. The alpha is designed for those who want to be a part of the games development and are willing to endure the bugs and lack of content for the time being.

Vehicles will be fantastic, the standalone will slowly evolve past the mods limitations.

I've played for 56 hours and haven't seen one either.

It won't be on sale before it's fully released which is in 1-2 years.

Another thing you will need to take into consideration is that have to be very patient. Initially you're going to die repeatedly as you learn the mechanics, also getting killed on sight when you meet other survivors due to the fact that some people find it fun to hunt fresh spawns. The game is also much more fun with friends and isn't a great solo experience unless if you prefer it that way, if you end up getting the game then you can add me on Steam and I'll show you the ropes.

My personal philosophy is to wait until a game comes out and not buy it when it's in "Early Access".

 

To me, it's just like pre-ordering, and I don't support pre-orders either.
