its in theory a 1024gb ssd but the controller has overprovisioning which is basically some of the nand locked to the controller in order to help with garbage collection and stuff. So it could be considered as a 960gb drive as only 960gb is usuable. The firmware is just drivers and other software, it doesnt affect the actual hardware thus does not add 40gb.
