I have an E3-1230 V3 and it is a beast in gaming. And editing, streaming, and general productivity. I highly recommend any 4+ core Xeon.

You can game on them, but they aren't designed for that sort of use-case. i5 and nothing higher for gaming alone.

I haven't seen ANY benchmarks with Xeon gaming, but I can only assume they'd perform worse than a Core processor, only because the games being limited in the amount of cores used, no hyperthreading support and the decreased clock speeds.

This question has plagued me for quite some time. Looking for informative answers here!

Edit- @ above, I'm pretty sure games don't use hyperthreading.

There are many different types of xeons and they very as much as the mainstream consumer cpus.

They can be used for gaming and how well it would perform depends on which cpu you're talking about.

What separates a xeon from a mainstream consumer cpus is that they are rated to run 24/7/366 and have different features such as support for ECC memory. You can check out which specific features are different by comparing cpus with Intel's spec sheets.

I have a Xeon 1220 v2 and I'm pretty happy with it. I got it like 50% off from a friend and it was brandnew. Forget the pepole who say Xeons are not for gaming or not designed for it. It basically makes 0 difference if you are using a Xeon instead of a core series processor.

CPU: i7-4770k (LM modded) - MB: GA-Z87X-UD3H - RAM: HyperX, 16GB 1866MHz - GPU: Palit GTX 980Ti Super - Storage: 1TB HDD + 500GB/120GB SSD (850 Evo/840) - Monitor: Predator XB271HU - PSU: 700W BeQuiet 80+ Gold

Yea was going to say their the same cpu wise essentially. Its when you look into their feature sets where they differ and guess what most ganes dont even pull from the consume feature setbso your all good.

Most xeons perform as good as core series processors in games... With the exception of those that use a different instruction set, the instruction set usually is listed on the ark.intel site for reference. Most use the same instruction set, but unless you want to research instruction sets(not easy to find information on by the way) then just stick to the xeons that have the same instruction set as the core series. @The Doctor earlier in this thread suggested a Xeon, it is an exceptional CPU for all applications... Well, almost all, definitely worth looking into as well as other E3 Xeons. Bear in mind, one reason why Xeons are always used as gaming CPU's even though you can essentially get a cherry picked i7 for cheaper than a 4770k for instance is that you can overclock them. Overclocking is more important to some than others, especially if running a crazy GPU set up. But you should be more than fine with a stock CPU, not many high end CPU's have any sort of bottleneck on normal GPU configurations, even at stock.... Sorry about the lack of formatting and spelling errors if there are any... Phones are great. Turkey.

Some misinformation in this thread that I'd like to clear up.

For desktop use a Xeon clocked at the same speed as a Core processor and with the same turbo level support on the same platform will perform EXACTLY the same. EXACTLY. No different.

Also, Xeons are no longer overclockable, so once you factor in any tweaking, a Core K-series processor makes a ton more sense.

Whoo so as a intel response member I have proved my worth! Also I dont know if you would consider this overclocking but you should be able to, depending on the motherboard, force it to constantly run at the turbo speed.

Xeons, are pretty much good at everything, beasts in gaming, editing, streaming and so on. It's not really very optimal, considering the price though. If you want something in that kind of class for gamiing and editing, maybe go for an extreme edition

Some of that depends on which Xeon though. A 1230 v2/v3 is more or less a 3770/4770 at $100 cheaper (and no iGPU).

EDIT: Mistype.

If you want to, sure. I used one of the old 1.8GHz Xeons in my old PC, and it was able to keep up to my 2.0GHz Pentium 4, and in some cases surpassed it.
