SATA to PCIe Power adapter Question

Everyone knows that these adapters are a bad idea but does anyone think i can get away with using one on a GeForce GTX 1650. I mistakenly ordered one on newegg that requires a 6 pin connector. This is assuming the power supply itself it not a limitation, only the lack of the connector.

i dont think SATA provides that much power you would need a molex to pcie adapter

Unfortunately this power supply has no molex connectors at all.

I'd return it and order a model with no connector required, but sadly the return policy is for replacement only.

I think that it will be ok, becouse 1650 is low power gpu anyway, though I would use one which has 2 sata ports.

Sounds like a horrible PSU.

Correct.  There's only one +12V lead and the pins on the connector are very thin and not capable of delivering much current.

SATA is capable of only supplying 54W on the 12V line. 12V is needed for PCIe. 6-pin PCIe power can draw up to 75W.

 

EDIT: Theoretically speaking though, NVIDIA states the GPU uses 75W of power. It's likely the card isn't drawing 150W but is just a hair over the 75W limit the slot can provide.

There aren't any in-depth reviews on the unit as it is OEM.

Its an 80+ Gold 300W Dell unit. I can include pictures later if interested.

My plan is I'm going to buy a proper CX series PSU from corsair if need to as these are my go-to for most cheap builds, but this rig in particular is also heavily budget constrained.

That's not a logical argument as that PSU is not good enough for that build.

 

So the facts are you have a GTX1650.  That is all.

 

Buy a new PSU.

that defines "bad idea" since you're getting less speed and still on a risky PSU

@BarackOBatman Id do it, personally.  If possible, and the only way Id want to do it for sure is if I were to daisychain off two unique Sata power lines from the PSU - I.E. don't connect both Sata power to the same sata cable, use two diff sata cables or likely melt may occur

Thats what i was thinking. I'm hoping the GPU sips power over the adapter cable, but my fear is that it'll draw half over the cable, and half though the slot. If it uses 30 or so watts over the cable, i think it'll push the adapter a little further than i'm comfortable with.

Yeah, if i do it, it'll definitely a 2 SATA to one PCIe and two separate chains off the PSU.

Total power draw is just a hair over what the slot can provide. Tom's Hardware's measurements also include how much was pulled from the cable, and it looks like, at least in the particular card they used, power draw is split between the slot and the cable.

Bottom line is that it isn't advised at all and you'll be at a true risk of failure, but from the get go it should work.

 

If you don't mind the likelihood of your components dying or the cheap adapter catching on fire then who are we to stop you, it is likely to work at the start and if that's all you care about go for it.

It's an old Dell, so if it bursts into flames, there's no big loss.

I guess it depends on whether this rig takes anything with it should that happen.

Some "tinkerers" probably would either try to cut the power supply cables to put a molex onto it or use the SATA plug with that adapter and put properly selected 12V fuses (commonly found in cars) in series on the 12V lines.

I don't recommend doing any of those things, just getting a proper PSU is what I would do.
