Xbox Announced it will release a cloud based console with no optical drive and no on hand storage for games.

Will this be the new way for gaming? Will everyone have unlimited online storage or is this a new way to squeeze more money out of gamers??

I would like to hear peoples thoughts and maybe LTT can see if they can get a review of the xbox 2020 concept?

It might be the future for those with decent internet connections, but many gamers live in places where the internet connectivity is either not fast enough or not reliable enough for a 100% cloud based streaming service to be feasible, at least not without high latency & frame drops from time to time. They're definitely not going to give away "unlimited" storage (although you can bet they'll pull the same false advertising bullshit that every cellular provider is doing now by calling things "unlimited") and they're most definitely going to use online services to squeeze more money out of gamers.

Not quite sure how one would review a product that doesn't even have a press-release prototype available yet...

They might as well. This is going to cost them so little to make in the grand scheme of things after all. They might as well give it a shot.

I'm sure it will at the very least outsell the Google Stadia. That thing's pricing model is a joke.

Honestly I would like to have an option that stores the games on external storage. Even if my internet is fast enough, it's not 100% available though I still want to be able to play the games. Plus the ability to carry the hard drive to friends and just start playing has been awesome; given the same internet argument...

I'm not sure why it even requires a console at that point.  Every modern device is capable of decoding a video stream at sufficient resolution, quality, and framerate.  They just need an app for smart TVs and other devices.  I can imagine wanting to sell a dedicated unit I guess but they better make it like $50 or less.  Tbh, because it's obviously going to require a subscription to cover the cost, they may as well make it free if you sign up for a year or something like that.

As for the tech itself, it's certainly not the first time it's been tried and I doubt it will be the last.  There's pros and cons, but mainly the latter at this point.  Needing a constant internet connection - and a good one at that - for a start.  Even if it is good, the latency will only add to the already near unacceptable levels most people are dealing with due to gaming on slow TVs rather than a monitor.  Then there's the cost.  I guess this will vary by person but I'd imagine that the expense for this vs a local unit + games will ultimately be more in the long run.  To top it all off, the visual quality will not be as good due to video compression.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

where did you see its cloud based? Microsoft has come out and actually announced its not working on a streaming console at all right now and will have on hand storage in the way of SSDs instead of HDDs

Didn't Microsoft want the XboxOne to possibly serve as an intermediary step between hardware and cloud based gaming? I for some reason recall that this was part of the discussion early on. The hardware/infrustructure never got developed enough during the XO's lifespan to make that a reality.

The XboxTwo will still be like the current situation with hardware based gaming, some consoles with disc support and some all digital. The transition doesn't really need a specific console, it will likely be app based.

I think the biggest change during the next console is going to be the all digital route. I do think discs will still be the main thing early on, but the switch to primarily digital for most users will definitely happen early on. I am on the fence on whether there will be another generation after next. I am one of those people who don't have adequate internet for cloud based gaming, but I could see a decision being made to not support gamers like myself if the adoption becomes large enough to warrant the exclusion of this niche market.

I do think Microsofts attempt at cloud based gaming will happen during the next console generation, I would figure a couple of years in, but it depends on whether the pressure by Google's Stadia will speed up the launch. At the very least it would be a mistake to lead with this around launch and risk creating ill-will like they did with the XboxOne launch.

The Stadia will be the test of the viability of the concept in both hardware/infrastructure and consumer adoption. If it doesn't gain traction quick enough then Microsoft will likely delay their own cloud service, and you would likely see Google drop the Stadia (faster than Linus and expensive tech).

  • 2 weeks later...

I personally hate the whole idea of cloud gaming services, why the hell would i pay a single cent for something that won't function without a fast internet connection?

Maybe it's just because i'm an Aussie and accustomed to shit internet but i will never stop wanting to own my own hardware be it PC or console.
