Best PSU for the situation in question.

kingknightrider
Go to solution Solved by kingknightrider,

Well the choice was made for me apparently.

At the store here the be-quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 1200W is out of stock and the CORSAIR HX Series -HX1200 is on back order till November.

So had to go with the Seasonic PRIME 1300 Gold SSR-1300GD 1300W instead...

Still it is an upgrade from this current PSU and AMD FX build for use in this new Ryzen system build:

Antec High Current Gamer HCG-900, 80 PLUS BRONZE, 900 Watt Power Supply

What is the best PSU that can endure at at least 60% (550W - 750W) constant HEAVY load?

24/7?

For over 5 years?

That is between 150-250 USD?

In this situation are single or multi V -rails better?

Multi-rail is always better, when properly configured.

I'd say get a Corsair RMi, as that's multi-rail or the Bitfenix Whisper M 850w.

You can also opt for Corsair's HXs (grey label) or AXi's (1000w and up)

If you're in the UK, the be quiet! Straight Power 11 is also an excellent choice.

Multi-rail?

I think my current PSU is also a multi-rail PSU...

If so I can see the point of a multi-rail -for it has been running just like the question asked...

I have looked at those PSU's and all seem to be modular.
Are there any that are not modular that would fit this category?

I have a tendency to get wires mixed upped and or pulled out.

The only one I can seem to find is the:

RAIDMAX RX-1000AE

Is that a good one one or not so much?

I feel like the latter more than most.

BTW I am in the United States -will fix that shortly.

24/7? Probably a server unit then , anything from Delta should be fine..

It will be a gaming/business/audio & video editing workstation not a server -replacing current GBAV workstation.

On 24/7 due to business and the fact that I do edit and game at odd hours.

Are we thinking of the same Delta company?

That company here in the United States does still deal with construction doesn't it?

Raidmax doesn't have any good PSUs out there. All of their units lack over temperature protection. There is one non-modular PSU I know of, but I  think its maximum wattage is 850w: Bitfenix Formula Gold.

Honestly, I wouldn't look at modularity, just look for a good PSU. The PSU's I've mentioned earlier are excellent picks.

Had two that would not fasten and hold to the PSU -could slide right out if just pulled slightly -if that is no longer the case with modular I am indeed open to them.

Ok.

Thought so.

Just clarify for me that the bequiet will lock into the PSU and stay latched and not just slide right out -had two modular that were this way long ago but they don't even show up anymore on websites and I am open to modular again.

Speaking of which for the life of me according to the bequiet website what is the difference between the Straight Power 11 and the Dark Power 11?

Under the specs they look almost identical.

Is it the Full Bridge vs the no bridge that is the only main difference?

Dark Power Pro utilizes a better primary side topology, which is more efficient at its task. The DPP is also platinum efficiency. Nothing major but still a nice to have. iirc, it has a better fan and it will have better internals. It is also still Multi-rail (Four 12v rails).

DPP is an overall upgrade to the SP11.

Don't worry about average lifetime. It's not possible to extrapolate an accurate or definitive lifespan for a PSU, as it varies far too wildly.

EDIT: I want to note that just because a PSU is single rail, doesn't mean it's bad. Take for instance the Corsair RMx or the EVGA G2/P2/T2.

If you're in the US, be quiet!s stuff is going to be stupid expensive. You're better off looking to Corsair's HX series.

Like this one:

https://www.amazon.com/CORSAIR-Platinum-Certified-Modular-Supply/dp/B01MZ8A8NW/

?

Though the fact that it has a Vrail switch is concerning to me... I doubt that "IF" it failed under multiple that it would still work if switching to single and vice versa... should I not be as concerned as I am?

Still strange why the two different models of the Be Quiet are the same price and actually if it was not marked down the Corsair would be 9 cents more than BOTH the be quiet's... again very strange...

I am going for extra head room in wattage because I decided to add an 5700XT -WHEN Sapphire releases its Nitro+ version and about eight more fans plus another exhaust fan plus maybe RGB... been needing more blue light in this dark space...

My bad, my brain didn't register that they were 1000w+ PSUs. That's more or less normal for high end units.

be quiet! doesn't really regulate the price IIRC. Blame Amazon. But my area of knowledge isn't how they price the units and such. Just the actual units themselves.

Not a problem.

But all are good PSU's so either one would do?

The Corsiar HX Platinum and Be Quiet Dark Power Pro? Yes, both are exceptionally good.

Do you have a list of specs for your system that the PSU is for? I haven't seen it asked yet. Depending on the hardware you're using you might not even require a 1000W+ PSU.

If it fails? As in the PSU dies? In that situation toggling between multi-rail and single rail won't help - the PSU would be dead. Same as any other PSU that fails.

Settling on the DP11 -slight hicup though...

There is a 1000W and 1200W model and they are listed at the same price is there price gouging going on here?

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FWUHOBA/

It's not uncommon these days to see high wattage units sell for the same price as lower wattage units. Sometimes it's sales, sometimes they're just overstocked on high wattage units since few people are buying them these days since GPU mining is no longer profitable for most mainstream coins.

Could also just be Amazon being Amazon and having weird prices on some things.

I have looked at those PSU's and all seem to be modular.
Are there any that are not modular that would fit this category?

I have a tendency to get wires mixed upped and or pulled out.

Most high end PSUs are semi-modular or fully modular.
I wouldn't worry too much about mixing up the cables plugging in to the PSU side. They're pretty much foolproof.
As for the Corsair units (HX) they have 8pin connectors used for both PCIe and CPU and they have 6pin connectors used for both Molex and SATA. Motherboard is a 18+10 pin connector.
The Be Quiet Dark Power Pro is one of the few high end semi-modular units, with the motherboard 24pin attached. The CPU connector is 8pin with the PCIe connector a 12pin. The Molex and SATA connectors use a 5pin.
As you can see in the pictures below you're not going to accidentally plug them in the wrong spots on the PSU side. They're also labelled on the PSU what goes where, and the connectors on the cables themselves will be labelled as "PSU" or "CPU" (etc) so you know which side of the cable goes where. As far as the component side goes well that's going to be the same whether it's modular or not.

So its an 18+10 connector to the PSU but still 24 pin into MB connection or I miss something?

Yeah I usually don't list my spec designs anymore because it creates controversy. Which why I did the Wattage calculations via pcpartpicker and added 100-200 Watts to be safe. I build computers to run via air and not water and also to last ten years and not have to be serviced nor upgraded -ever. Also to be underclocked to run faster, more stable and cooler than most rigs of equal caliber and to be on 24/7.

The system in my signature runs on air and never hits above 40-42*C under load on the CPU & GPU never goes over 60-65*C in a 27.7*C environment.

Case in point when running Metro Exodus and two audio encodings- though they completed early so terminated the game early:

AMD Ryzen 7 3800X

ASUS Prime X570-P

SilverStone Tek 2.4G Wireless Power Remote with Power/Reset Function and Audio Feedback ES02-PCIE

48GB of RAM

4x 6TB WD Enterprise Drives

ATI Raedon Vega 56 -to be upgraded to the 5700XT -WHEN Sapphire releases its Nitro+ version and goes down a bit in price.

Maybe later upgrade to Nvidia Geforce 1080 TI... or maybe may put it in as well in the system -if I can get it to run as intended and thought (game card and an encoder card). RTX line only benefit is Ray tracing so I am told -so it is not of use to me.

A LOT of fans (8 Nocuta 120 F12's and 8 Noctua A 25's -I think are the models) -may be slightly off and at least two exhaust fans.

One of the 220mm fans from the the THOR v2 black case from Rosewill will also be included.

Noctua DH15 3 Fan Mod

Corsair Dominator Platinum Airflow RGB LED Memory Fan Cooling CMDAF2

At least three RGB strips (NOTE: Going to lead outside of the system).

I'm skeptical at how well the AMD & Nvidia cards will work together, if at all. The drivers could be problematic.

Regardless, for arguments sake (let's say you're running the system as two separate VMs), then power consumption for the two cards together would be in the neighbourhood of 600W or so if they're both under load at the same time. With the rest of the system 1000W PSU will be adequate.

It's a fine PSU, but the other options you were considering (Corsair HX Platinum & BeQuiet Dark Power Pro) are in my opinion better choices.

Seen it done somewhere ATI & NVIDIA gonna try -if 1080 goes down in price -otherwise the Vega and the 5700.

You sure it is wise considering the fact of the 16+ fans mentioned above going into this build plus hard drive fans, the 3 cpu fans and four graphics card 120mm fans as well? -And still may add RGB...?

Well though that was strange that the 1300 was cheaper but also noticed it -the sonic does not have a 1200 model... does that equal shady practice of the company or just the Gold vs Platinum rating?

Fan's don't require a lot of power. Maybe 1-3W per fan. You can read the sticker on the fan to see how much current each fan needs. You can also check the spec sheet on the manufacturers website, they will often list it as well.

Yeah.  You missed something.

The extra leads are "sense wires". What they do is sense the voltage close to the load so if they are +/- the PSU can compensate accordingly.
