What OS is best for a new Build?

SiCkHiTrEg

My old build used windows 7 pro and is several years old at this point.  So I am wondering what is best atm?  Is windows 10 just the go to at this point?  And do I need pro to run 32gb ram because if i recall correctly with 7 I needed pro to run more then 16gb ram.  And then 32 vs 64 bit?

the only option now is windows 10 64bit

you shouldnt use 32bits, only uses 3gbs of ram

windows 7 will reach end of life in a couple months, is a 10 year old os, no one should use it anymore

if you still have a retail version of windows 7 pro, you can install windows 10 pro and use that license to activate windows 10, microsoft allows this

If you prefer Windows, it's Windows 10.

If you prefer Linux, it's popOS.

If you prefer Mac, you don't deserve a PC.

That should be pretty well know for anyone that has used windows 10. Its just not a very usable/stable OS compared to 7, sure its better then 8.0, but MS is braking things left and right with with and changing things up to much with every major update. MS just needs to leave it alone form the user stand point and fix all its bugs.

And what about 16bit legacy apps that can't be ran in a VM? Or did windows 10 64bit fix that ?

Windows 10 Home supports up to 128GB of ram, while Windows 10 Pro supports up to 2TB of ram. Go with 64bit not need for 32bit anymore.

Just a dumb question, who uses windows 10 and not windows sever or Linux or something on a system with 2tb of ram?

Windows "9" is a thing :)

I use it. love it. All the advantages of 7 and 10, none of the BS from 10. (unless you are a hardcore gaming geek, I don't think it supports DX12)

LTT did some videos on it. Simply a fantastic OS. What windows should have become instead of the mess that is 10

If I have the retail version of windows 7 pro which can upgrade to windows 10 pro, can i just download windows 10 pro instead and just install and use other key?  I also need to install from a usb and dont think microsoft allows this from them?  So what source is ok to get windows from?

Hopefully no one out there, but they might be in some use cases where the individual just needs a lot of ram, but don't want to spend the money on getting license for Windows Server, which is a lot more expensive.

I can't see cost being a factor, 2tb of ram would be crazy costly. I guise I can see its use as a big oll ram drive under 10, but that is it.

IMO, Its gotten worse form a user stand point. Sure you system might not get bricked or your files wiped after an update now. Witch is good.

That was a mistake on Microsoft's end and they admitted it however they've learnt from it and it hasn't happened again with the 1903 update (not that I know of anyway). I think sometimes people make mountains out of molehills, people complain for just the sake of complaining.

Win10 in the home space is bad, but in the business space is worse. I manage over 1,000 systems and we are actively looking at *nix where possible because Win10 is such a problem with our, admittedly, specialized environment.

that is what i said

to install from usb search for windows 10 iso download

the first option on google should be the official tool to create the usb installer, follow steps and remember to select 64bit installer only

Wile i don't mind 10 for the home user. I don't use it. But that is just me. However in the work place its a pain in the rear.

I defiantly agree, but there were a small hand full of updates like the creators update the bricked systems or broke something.

How can you be so sure? I know I ran into problems after updates on 10 alot since then, no bricked systems. But other problems non the less. The chance of M$ messing up is still there.

It didn't 'brick' systems or break anything it just screwed Windows up, something that could be solved with the repair function or a full reinstall (annoying I know).

I've got a positive belief that it won't happen again. What's happened in the past has happened, as Win 10 users we need to have a positive view of things because it's no good to be negative all the time.
