GTX 960 does not display video

i got a used EVGA GTX 960 SC that wont display on boot-up, i tested the gpu on my main rig, a dell precision 390, and it worked on the first try, but after a restart it stopped displaying anything on my monitor, and if i reinstall the GPU it had previously (EVGA GTX 660), it will boot up fine,i didn,t touch the 960 when i first fired it up, and i placed it in a esd mat so i kinda doubt that esd damage is a factor here, has anyone else experience anything like this

well an RMA won't be possible with this card, i bought this card as non-functional on ebay, the seller said in the description that the card would crash during games and boot up whenever the card felt like it,

Why would you get it then ?  If he is telling you its a bad card.  How much did you pay for it if I can ask ?

10 dollars and free shipping, and i bought it because i buy cheap "broken" GPUs that i think i know what is wrong with them, they usually have dry thermal paste,need to be cleaned, or dirt or something is shorting something out., you get the idea, and so far this is the only gpu that seems to be a bit stubborn

i normally use GPUz to determine if the card is fake or not but since i cant see anything on screen, i, when i opened up the card and searched up the number on the GPU chip, it was a maxwell architecture GPU, so i guess it could be legit

 i removed the cooler from the card and i placed my finger on the GPU die (while being grounded with an esd bracelet or whatever you call them) and i cant feel any heat from the die or anywhere on the board, which is a bit strange

The BIOS can send wrong information.  I believe these are fake, does it say the company name on the video card ?

Oh so it says EVGA On it hmmm.  Then it is not fake.  The guy even admitted its a botched card.  I don't understand what you want to do with it now at this point.

Why can't it be fake if it says evga? But I second the second part. card was sold as dead. Why would OP think the card would work?

Anyway, OP have you tried baking the card?

Like I just said its not fake.  But if he told you its a botched card, then I don't understand what you want to do with it.  Souvenir or something.

But how can't it be fake if it says EVGA? I could buy a old EVGA card and mod the bios and sell it off as something else. If I could do that why can't someone ease that is willing to do so do it ?

I mean I don't see it being a fake, not many fakes say EVGA on them. but its still possible.

unless you are doing board level repairs then its probably borked beyond your ability here. you could inspect for the suual suspect. clean the pci bar, check the capacitors for bulging caps and replace if you know how. though if random crashing and sometimes not working i would suspect an issue with the power connector and replace it or just reseat the existing one and hope it was a bad connection there

A gpu baked to a crisp? Now that sounds fun

 

but in all seriousness I would have tried that if I had a mini oven, the reason why I haven't done it with my oven in the kitchen is because when you heat a gpu in a oven it releases fumes that will contaminate the oven and any food that is baked afterwards

if you are that concerned i would just seal it in aluminum foil, but i have found baking rarely does much if anything... though is it is just barely a loose power connector which i suspect it is based on symptoms it might

I will try to resolver the pci power plug, but so far I don't have a fine tip for my soldering iron for incase i have to swap something small on the pcb so that will have to wait, as for the rest there is no visible buldgeing capacitors on the board, I have tried cleaning the pcb and the pci bar

I mean I don't see it being a fake, not many fakes say EVGA on them. but its still possible.
