Can a semi truck support a desktop computer?

I’ve seen a couple similar posts reguarding power supply and it’s need for being “clean” to be able to safely run the computer without fear of damaging it. I’m driving for a company that does not have an APU but just a freedom hf xantrex inverter that supports 1800w in inversion mode(truck off). My current build is going to require probably 500-600w to run. I can post specs but I’m really just curious from a power supply standpoint on safety and consistency as I haven’t ordered a single part for my new build but it’s going to cost about 3500 and I don’t want to blow it up after using it for a month, thanks.

That produces a modified sine-wave. The safest option is an inverter that produces pure sine-wave.

I'd look into getting a pure sine-wave UPS. especially after spending that kind of money.

Unfortunately it’s a company truck so I can’t install a different inverter to get pure sine power, would there be a difference if I had the truck running so it’s running off the real batteries?

A UPS works pretty much the same as a power strip, no installation needed. You just plug it into the outlet.

Yea i mis clicked, what does UPS stand for? Does it serve as a form surge protector of sorts?

That doesn't change what the inverter does, you know. The inverter doesn't care, it'll output the same thing either way.

Uninterruptible Power Supply. It's pretty much a battery back-up for your computer. 

 

All UPS's have surge protection built in since the purpose of them is to protect your computer from shutting down or getting damaged from electrical events such as brown-outs or power outages.

Hmm will that cause an additional strain on the inverter by requiring it’s on wattage to charge, if I understand correctly? And if that UPS gets low is there a way to tell so I know to turn my computer off so I don’t get the bad sine power? Thanks for the speedy replies btw I didn’t expect info this fast.

Most modern UPSes do come with a USB-cable that you can plug into computer and it'll show you the UPS's battery-status just like you'd see if you had a regular laptop. Just make sure the UPS you're gunning for has that and you're all good, you can then configure your PC to shutdown automatically if power goes low or whatever.

As a truck driver I can say that you will drain your batteries pretty quick on the truck. My laptop can be on gaming and working on battery from the truck for about 7 hours before it goes into low power mode to protect the truck batteries. And that's a laptop pulling 170 watts only.

Couldn't you just idle the truck to keep the alternating going or put a generating on the back if you really need to. Seems like a lot to play games. I'd just get a switch

Some companies actually have idle temperature settings. The company i have my truck leased to has this on the company trucks. If the temperature is between 20F and 70F it will not idle. Above or below they will.

20F? I'd be pissed if it was 22F outside and I couldn't pump heat through my cab.

 

Even 50F would be a little chilly.

The truck I own has a bunk heater in it. Basically it's a small heater that burns diesel to put heat in the truck. And it cranks out the heat. As for pumping ac some do some don't. Mine doesn't. So I use fans in my truck. Though that will be changing soon as I'm in the process of purchasing a new truck.

It shouldn't cause additional strain, since it should only be pulling however much power your PC is pulling unless you have recently had an "event" and the batteries need to charge.

 

My UPS will beep like crazy every half a minute or so to let the user know that it's running off battery (it can be muted). Typically once you hear it start beeping you shut the computer down since that's all most of the UPS's are made for. It's not really meant to be able to game on for long periods of time without power. There's also a USB interface that you can monitor things with.

 

If I understand correctly you will be using it mostly to clean/condition the power going into your computer and monitor, so it should be rare that it actually has to switch to battery power unless you lose power in your truck.

 

I would also recommend these to the average home user since bad power can easily mess with computers.

Before you buy anything, check with your company to make sure they are happy with you, not only running a powerful PC off their truck, but they are even ok with you having something like that in one of their trucks. 

 

Could be an issue with their insurance making the truck more of a target plus the additional cost of having to cover something like that. Even if you have to cover it with your own insurance, make sure you still let your company know. They might turn around and say "no" in which case you will save a lot of money and headaches

UPS's are designed to help protect your equipment from power outages and spikes in some cases. There are several types of UPS's out there. I have a Line Interactive model. That means if I have a Spike, Sag or compete outage the UPS cleans the power to my computer. In an Outage my computer will run for a short while. Keep in mind UPS's are not made to run your computer for long. This is due to the fact that the battery is DC and the PC power supply needs AC and then its converted back to DC. So not very efficient.

 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
