Is my graphics card running at PCIe 1.0 x16?

Hello! 

By looking in the BIOS settings, I’ve noticed that my graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GT 640 (1GB DDR3 PCIe 3.0 x16) runs @ PCIe 1.0 x16!

My motherboard is Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master, and the BIOS runs at “Default settings”.

 

Can anyone tell me why is this?

I would say the motherboard is scaling things due to that video card not needing much bandwidth but I honestly don't know.

Bandwidth is reduced when there's no load. You'll notice in CPU-Z that it says something like "PCIe 3.0 x16 @ PCIe 1.0 x16"

 

Not that it matters at all for a GT 640, it could run on PCI and probably be fine.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the integrated GPU on the 9700k surpasses a GT 640. The regular GT cards have always been a really bad value, and that's one from 2012. You'd see an enormous improvement by spending a little money on an RX 570.

I would have saved $100 on a motherboard and gone with 16GB of RAM to help save for a video card.

 

And not bought that expensive ass SSD.

 

Got a solid foundation tho, but can't do jack with it.

jstudrawa my main occupation ain’t gaming! It’s music production. 

Graphics card wasn’t that much of a priority, for me. But I’ll take care of that aspect too, sooner or later.

Either way in most cases like this, the graphics card went to a lower power state which includes lowering PCIe bandwidth. If you really want to confirm your graphics card runs at PCIe 3.0, have it do something like Ungine Heaven with GPU-z open. GPU-z will tell you what PCIe spec the card is currently running at.

Well I'd recommend removing it and connecting your monitor directly to your motherboard, unless you need multiple monitors hooked up at once.  It's a low powered card, but still not nearly as efficient as the 9700k's iGPU.  You'll save a couple bucks a month on your power bill with no real downside.  You also could sell the card for $20 to someone who doesn't have an iGPU.  The GT 640 draws up to 65W, while the Intel UHD 630 (your iGPU) draws up to 15W.

I guess that’s a possibility too.
