When upgrading PC all around, what component is the most important thing to upgrade first?

Hi I'm new here, and am just trying to learn a bit more about building and understanding how PC works.

If I were to want to upgrade my PC, what would be the most important thing to upgrade first?

CPU, graphics card, or something else?

thank you for taking the time to read this thread,

Depends on the system - some need a power supply replacement, others need an SSD. You can't make a general statement really.

If you're coming from a very old system with HDD main drive, upgrade to SSD.

If you're a gamer, upgrade GPU.

If you need more horsepower for your work, upgrade CPU.

If you only have 4gb ram, upgrade to 8 or 16.

It will always depend on a number of factors:

1. What are you looking to do with your PC next?

2. Are there any shortcomings that need some work on your PC?

3. Are there things you can wait on?

Personally, for me, I'd upgrade my CPU first.

Depends on system and what you are trying to get better. Take my last few upgrades:

  • Upcoming: Another 2tb hard drive. Because all the videos I have really take the space.
  • Last: bigger SSDs. Because my games take the space (current is 500gb, last was 120gb).
  • GPU: Again for video editing. Doing it with 1Gb video memory just wasn't enough. Current was used, but it has 3gb or video memory (GTX 780 Founders)
  • Case: previous one was literally disintegrating.
  • Moar RAM: Another 8gb because I had trouble loading GIS data.

I think I changed mouse in there somewhere, but thats something I change every 3-5 years anyway because the surface of those will wear off. Same with mouse pad.

Next bigger upgrade (CPU+mobo+RAM+case) will be for smaller sizing. I probably need to get another GPU before that.
