Anime folks - why are cat girls so popular?

Follow my logic here - cats are assholes generally and dogs are amazing loyal partners and friends.

 

So what's the deal? If you prefer cat girls, why would you choose a cat girl over a dog girl? Why don't we see more dog girls? Not the furry kind, mind you. But in the same vein as Miqote from Final Fantasy XIV.

 

Please explain because I'm genuinely confused.

It's not just cat girls, it's Kemonomimi, "describes humanoid characters that possess animal-like features." and simply: because they are cute

 

Cats are by far more popular when it comes to the depiction of Kemonomimi in anime, followed closely by foxes.

Cats are generally seen as good luck in Japan, There are shrines that worship cats as gods. Cats are a much bigger part of Japanese culture than Dogs are

 

Foxes are generally portrayed in stories as faithful guardians, friends, lovers, and wives and sometimes tricksters. and again have a huge part in Japanese (well, basically all east asia) culture.

I think at this point it's kind of a trope/meme and most are just there for the lulz and fan service and as a joke about anime itself.

Squirrels are evolved rats...

 

Cats are cute and sexy. I'm not kidding, they appeal to a part of your human brain because of the way they walk, their fur that is nice to feel under your hand, etc.

So the nekomimi just truly appeal to the subliminal association you're doing in your head between the cuteness of the cat and the cuteness of a young girl.

So in many instances it's very... disturbing if you pay close attention to what it calls.

 

And no, you don't feel the same way towards the other kemonomimi, IMO that is really well depicted in the anime "Fruits Basket".
