AMD Wraith Prism vs Noctua L9x65

Goldman

Hey guys i've been looking to move from my ATX build to an ITX one, got an asus rog b450-i(got a ryzen 1600x)  and am planning to get an itx mobo.

The problem is that right now i'm using a CM hyper 212, so i want to change to a smaller cooler. was looking at getting an used wraith prism, or a noctua L9x65.

I'm not gonna overclock, and am not fond of water cooling tbh. What are your thoughts? i've read that the prism has better cooling, and also rbg but the noctua is easier for me to get where i live (argentina sucks, btw)

The Wraith Prism is still considerably tall at 96.3mm (with its fan) versus 65mm for that Noctua cooler. Since you're going down to ITX, what case/s are you looking at? I assume you're not looking at slim ITX designs if the Wraith Prism is on the table.

tbh right now i'm thinking of getting a nzxt h210i, so there shouldn't be any problems even with my 212, but if i ever can(cant currently, got a vega 56 stock and it wouldnt fit) i would like to get something smaller like an inwin a1 or something like that.

I'm reading even the Inwin A1 can support a max cooler height of 160mm, so it would accomodate the Hyper 212 (159mm) just barely.

Regarding the cooling capabilities of the Wraith Prism vs the NH-L9x65, I'm not sure I would suggest the NH-L9x65 for a 1600X (95W TDP) based on Noctua's own suggestion for anything exceeding 84W TDP:

I can't find specifications for the Wraith Prism, but will update this post if I do. Granted they ship the Wraith Prism with the 3900X, a 105W TDP CPU, then I'd imagine it's superior to the NH-L9x65 in thermals, but maybe not noise.

according to noctua's page, it says "Recommended with good case ventilation only". dunno what's their standard for good or bad case ventilation though.
anyway, any recommendation for another cooler that can work with 95 or so TDP and is kinda low profile?

EDIT: forgot to mention, my 212 is using the standard am4 bracket so it's pointing downwards(fan towards the GPU), i've heard that this affects airflow negatively, is this true?

It might not be optimal but the difference is generally pretty small. If your temps and acoustics are fine, I wouldn't bother getting a new cooler.

I mean the stock cooler is nice and all but there is a reason its free.  Because it is not a hardcore OCers HSF.  It is basically a POS compared to hyper 212 or Noctua DH-15 or Be Quiet DRP 4.........

the wraith prism is on par with the 212 evo, but might not fit really small ITX cases.

The NH-L12S is better but they're both still downgrades from the Hyper 212. Why get a new cooler if the current one fits?

got my reasons, but it's true that there's no rush to change. Specially because i've been getting problems to find an ITX case.

Care to elaborate? Is it the noise or aesthetics?

If you're aiming to lower noise, you're better off replacing the stock fan on the Hyper 212.

just in case, right now i have a 212, am looking to change for something smaller.
mostly about aesthetics as i'm hoping to change to a smaller ITX case at some point in time. Still probably by the time i can get my hands on a case like that, there will probably be new sockets so it's not that great of an idea lol.

inwin a1 looks great and the prism looks pretty awesome in it.

  • 3 weeks later...

finally found someone selling the wraith prism, funnily enough it's pretty good compared to my hyper 212(in the sense that it's not a much hotter), and not noisier(or at least, not noticiably so)

tested both with prime 95 in small FFT

Hyper 212:

image.png.44c0bc60dbde131895347593165e6d1b.png

Wraith Prism:

image.png.4ac6ac704581be766892bececa14c091.png

now i just need to get an ITX Case, sadly my country keeps sucking at economics and politics so there's still nothing anywhere(exept the Evolv ITX(tempered glass version) but i've heard the front panel chokes airflow, so i dont think i'll go for that)
