Internal or external blu-ray drive?

I'm looking to buy a blu-ray drive, so far the internal one are cheaper with decent rating. But since my computer doesn't have a bay for it, I will have to get an usb to sata adapter or something for it. On the other hand, the external one is like double the price but I couldn't find any that has a good rating.

 

Which one is the better choice?

Do you absolutely need a bluray drive? I'd say don't even bother getting one, but if you need to have one then go for what ever is the cheaper option.

I've tried using a Blu Ray drive externally though one of those hard drive SATA to USB adapters, and MakeMKV refused to work with it, so your mileage may vary. I would recommend a direct SATA connection, if possible.

If you get an external sata connector for an internal optical drive, make sure it includes a separate plug for power as the usb port alone can't power a full sized internal disc drive.

Wow this design look very neat. The main reason why I hesitated to buy the internal one is that the adapter I'd found look very messy and ugly.

 

I think I'll settle with internal + adapter, thanks.

I am using a 9.5mm Laptop Bluray Burner in a USB 3.0 Enclosure and it works great. The USB 3.0 Connection is fast enough and provides enough power for it to only need one USB Port and No Power Adapter. Best part is since it's USB if I need to copy a Disc Directly I can plug it into my Asus ROG Laptop that has it's own Bluray Burner.

I don't think usb 3.0 can power up an optical blu-ray drive alone, which needs 12v.

Think again. There are several that can operate on USB 3.0 power alone, starting with Pioneer.

"Internal" 5.25" drive-bay-drive, no, I'm pretty sure those will need 12V.

 

"Internal" laptop drive, yes, they can run from 5V USB alone (at least, I have one that does).

Yep, this is a 9.5mm Internal Laptop Bluray Burner in an enclosure. Works 100%. Great little solution.
