Home Theater, Car subs.

acidydragon

So I have an issue.

I have two fourteen inch car subs that I want to power from inside a house.

I went to a local stereo store, and they said they would need a 1000 watt amp.

How can I convert the 1000 watt car amp, into a wall outlet?

1) find a decent psu

2) find a decent class D monoblock

3) divide monoblock max output by .80

i.e. 500/.80= 625, you want at least a 650w PSU with a good single rail.

4) Man up, crack that PSU open and do some rewiring.

you could just buy an inverter too, it's probably easier to do that.

What kind of inverter do we need to look for?

One that turns AC(from your wall) into DC(that the car audio amp takes).  That's what the PSU is doing in the video above.

Like I said..it's going to be easier to sell what you have and buy something designed for what you want.

You could look at the input specs of that amp (volts and amps, probably 12V if it's a car setup, not sure on the amps, but likely a lot). You could then buy a DC Power Supply that takes 120VAC (Assuming north america, otherwise find one that has input of whatever your outlet puts out 220 or 240VAC probably), and outputs 12V with the necessary amps.

Though honestly getting a spare computer PSU is probably cheaper.

But as others have said, just sell the subs and buy a proper home theatre setup, UNLESS you're doing it as an educational exercise in electronics and electricity (learning about power supplies and electrical setups).
